Bersih 4.0 Rally : Mini Cooper replaces Volkswagen Beetle
Kuala Lumpur: The Bersih 4.0 rally is all set with thousands of supporters to storm the Malaysian streets this coming weekend. Bersih 4.0 is a planned series of rallies to be carried out on 29 to 30 August in major cities in Malaysia, namely Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. The rallies are to be organised by The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Malay: Gabungan Pilihanraya Bersih dan Adil) or Bersih (meaning clean in Malay). The rallies are being carried out with the chief objective to seek the resignation of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and calling for a clean governance in Malaysia.
A yellow Volkswagen Beetle was going to be used in that roadshow to promote the Bersih 4 rally, but it was vandalised by some hooligans. The vandals cut the fan belt and punctured two tyres after the Beetle was parked in Taman Molek, Johor Baru, during a Bersih tour of Johor. The exteriors of the car were seriously charred by the acid used. Thus, instead of taking this defaced car to the roadshow, it has been sent for repairs. The Bersih 4.0 leaders Fann, Mandeep and Wong Chin Huat were supposed to have travelled in the car to promote the rally. The Volkswagen Beetle car, which Fann has owned for six years, generated great interest in the Bersih roadshow in Taman Molek yesterday, with the public queueing to take pictures with the Beetle adorned with Bersih 4 stickers.
Although, the German hatchback is replaced by a classic yellow Mini Cooper, which will be the Bersih’s official car for a road tour to promote the rally. Bersih has started a photo campaign called "Bersih 4 Global Countdown" asking Malaysians all over the world to show their support for the rally by posting a picture of themselves with posters.
Mandeep, one of the leading person in the rally said that the car will be used for a nationwide roadshow after being repaired. So, they replaced the vehicle to send out a message that they are not afraid of this kind of intimidation, and the rally will still go on.
