BYD Malaysia teases something new - The next big reveal?

KUALA LUMPUR: Touted as Malaysia’s No.1 BEV brand, BYD has dropped a new cryptic teaser on its social media handle, announcing that something new is on the way. While the teaser fails to convey any real clue, it has generated quite a buzz among enthusiasts.

So, what could it be? Let’s break down some possibilities - 

The first possibility is the BYD Atto 2, as a right-hand-drive prototype of the EV has been spotted in Thailand, hinting at a potential entry into Southeast Asian markets. Another strong contender is the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, which has been launched in Thailand and is en route to Singapore.

The BYD Shark 6 pickup also made its debut in Thailand recently. However, it's less likely to be the one teased, as the automaker is still assessing the viability of introducing the pickup truck to the local market, suggesting it may take longer to arrive on our shores.

So, here’s a brief about the BYD Atto 2 and BYD Sealion 6 DM-i that may hit Malaysian soil soon.

BYD Atto 2

• Also known as the Yuan Up, the BYD Atto 2 is positioned between the Dolphin and Atto 3. 
• The Atto 2 is designed as an urban EV for those who don’t want to compromise on a premium finish and ‘big-car’ features. 
• Built on the e-Platform 3.0 modular architecture, it measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. 
• The EV is powered by a single front-mounted motor delivering 177 PS of maximum power and 290 Nm of peak torque. It completes the 0-100 kmph in 7.9 seconds and hits a top speed of 160 kmph.

• Feeding the motor is a 45.12 kWh Blade battery, offering a WLTP-rated range of 312 km. 
• Equipment pack comprises - 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.8-inch rotatable central touchscreen, eco-friendly vegan leather upholstery, heated seats and steering wheel, ambient light, power-folding side-view mirrors, parking radars and a surround-view camera system.

BYD Sealion 6 DM-i

• It is a five-seater plug-in hybrid SUV featuring BYD’s Dual Mode Intelligence (DM‑i) system.
• The EV is based on the automaker’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture and measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. The wheelbase is estimated at 2,765 mm.
• The drivetrain setup combines an FWD e-motor and a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine, generating a total system output of 218 PS and 300 Nm. It enables the SUV to hit the century sprint in 8.5 seconds.

• Also part of the plug-in system is an 18.3 kWh BYD Blade battery that offers an all-electric range of 92 km on a single charge. 
• The plug-in hybrid SUV is packed with several advanced bits such as - 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment unit mated to nine speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable seats, dual Qi wireless charging pads, and advanced driver-assistance systems
• The BYD Sealion 6 DM-i price in Thailand begins at THB 939,900 (approx RM 119k).
