Gear up for Ramadan: LLM enhances traffic management for Ramadan and Iftar rush

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) is gearing up for Ramadan, advising all highway operators to ensure travelers experience safe and seamless journeys during the holy month.

As reported by Bernama, according to LLM's Director-General, Datuk Sazali Harun, there's an expected uptick in traffic as Ramadan starts this Tuesday (March 12).

He emphasized the need for well-timed tidal lanes or smart lanes adjustments, impeccable facilities at rest stops, and peak cleanliness to accommodate the surge.

Sazali also highlighted the importance of adapting maintenance schedules to Ramadan's unique traffic patterns, identifying and easing congestion hotspots, and boosting facilities temporarily. Collaborating closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is also key to smoothing out traffic, particularly in bottleneck areas post-highway exits.

These recommendations come as part of LLM's commitment to ensuring the highest comfort and service level for highway users, a commitment echoed during Sazali's recent visit to check congestion mitigation measures on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway by ANIH Berhad at the Gombak Toll Plaza.

Expect heavier traffic from 4 PM to 7 PM as many will be heading to their destinations for Iftar, the evening meal to break the Ramadan fast. This surge aligns with both traditional Ramadan observances and the typical rush hour, significantly impacting traffic flow.

In Kuala Lumpur, rush hour typically occurs in the morning from about 7 AM to 9 AM and in the evening from 5 PM to 7 PM. These periods see increased traffic as people commute to and from work, leading to congestion on the roads, but during Ramadhan, the evening rush hour typically starts at 4.
