Jaecoo J8 launched in Malaysia – From RM178,800, up to 6 seats and AWD

KUALA LUMPUR:  After four months since its close-to-final preview, Omoda Jaecoo has officially launched the Jaecoo J8 in Malaysia, marking the arrival of the brand’s new flagship SUV.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the variant options and prices for the Jaecoo J8 in Malaysia?

    The Jaecoo J8 comes in two variants—a 2WD five-seater and an AWD six-seater—priced from RM178,000 to RM198,800.
  • What sets the AWD variant apart from the 2WD model?

The AWD variant adds a third row of seats, 14-speaker Sony audio with headrest speakers, ventilated and massaging seats, 10 airbags, Level 2.5 ADAS, CDC adaptive suspension, and automatic parking assist.
  • Joining the J7 and upcoming Omoda C7, the J8 enters Malaysia’s D-segment SUV space with two variants – a two-row 2WD five-seater and a three-row AWD six-seater, priced from RM178,000 to RM198,800.

This large SUV is sized to rival the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Mazda CX-8, measuring 4,820 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,699 mm tall, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase. For comparison, it’s slightly longer and wider than the Santa Fe and X90, while matching the Sorento in scale.

    Two layouts, one powertrain

Under the bonnet, both variants are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine that makes 249 PS and 385 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to the front wheels in the 2WD, or to all four wheels in the AWD.

Performance-wise, the AWD model completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.0 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h, while the 2WD does the 0–100 km/h sprint in 8.8 seconds with the same top speed.

Claimed WLTP fuel consumption is 8.1L/100 km for the AWD and 7.8L/100km for the 2WD. Both versions come with a 65-litre fuel tank.

The AWD version also benefits from Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension, which adjusts damping in real-time to suit road conditions and improve comfort.

    Distinctive design Inside and Out

Visually, the Jaecoo J8 stands out with a bold, and prominent vertical bars grille (officially called waterfall grille), slim LED headlamps, flush pop-out door handles, Dual-tone 20-inch alloys and full-width taillights.

The rear features blacked-out D-pillars, while subtle creases on the sides help create a more premium, sculpted profile.

Inside, the cabin design feels distinctly upmarket, with a wide twin 12.3-inch screen setup, wood trim, metallic air vents, and a high centre console—reminiscent of premium executive sedans from a certain German marque.

    Equipment and Features

Standard on the 2WD variant are:

    • 12-speaker Sony audio system
    • Faux leather upholstery
    • Ambient lighting
    • 6 airbags

The AWD model adds significantly more kit, including:

    • 14-speaker Sony system with headrest speakers
    • Leather upholstery and suede trim
    • Ventilated and massaging front seats
    • Power-adjustable second-row seats with massage
    • Fragrance diffuser
    • Built-in digital video recorder (DVR)
    • Automatic parking assist
    • NFC-based keyless entry
    • 10 airbags
    • Level 2.5 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)
    • 20-inch alloy wheels

Boot space is a key difference between the two – the 2WD offers a generous 738 litres, while the AWD’s third row reduces that to 200 litres due to the 6 seater configuration. Boot space (with second row folded) expands up to 2,021 litres.

    Safety

As the SUV is equipped with Level 2.5 ADAS capabilities, the JAECOO J8 will come equipped with a suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features.

These include Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Driver Monitoring System (DMS), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Distance Monitoring (FDM), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

The SUV also features an Event Data Recorder (EDR) and, exclusively for the AWD variant, Fully Automated Parking. Enhancing braking performance is a specially calibrated OneBox brake-by-wire system tailored specifically for the J8.

    Colours

The 2WD variant is available in Carbon Crystal Black, Khaki White, and Olive Grey, all in monotone finishes. The AWD variant uses the same base colours but comes exclusively in dual-tone with a black roof.

    Warranty and early bird promotion

The Jaecoo J8 comes with seven years or 150,000km vehicle warranty and for all bookings placed up to 21 July 2025, they will be receiving some early bird goodies, including:

    • 1 year free insurance coverage under Jaecoo Prime Protection Programme.
    • 10 Years engine warranty/unlimited kilometres whichever comes first.
    • 1 Exclusive off-road experience

The pricing of the Jaecoo J8 puts it right in the thick of the competition: the Kia Sorento (RM211k–RM255k), Hyundai Santa Fe (RM125–RM270k), Mazda CX-8 (RM185k–RM216k), and the more affordable Proton X90 (RM123k–RM153k).

Marking exactly one year since the debut of the Jaecoo J7 in Malaysia, the newly launched J8 takes things up a notch as the brand’s first 6-seater flagship SUV, proudly described as “Off Road First Class” — a tagline that encapsulates JAECOO’s identity as a premium off-road marque for urban elites and adventure seekers.

With over 17,000 OMODA | JAECOO vehicles now on Malaysian roads, the brand continues to push the theme of “From Classic, Beyond Classic” by marrying refined design with rugged capability.

Like its siblings, the J8 will be locally assembled at the Chery Corporate Malaysia Factory in Shah Alam.

Customer deliveries of the JAECOO J8 AWD are set to commence in July 2025, followed by the 2WD variant entering production thereafter.
