Toyota will slot the all-new 86 under Supra
KUALA LUMPUR: The all-new Toyota 86 will be revealed very soon. Though it was rumoured that the model would demise soon, the manufacturer recently announced that there are no plans to discontinue the model yet.
Brodie Bott, the public affairs manager at Toyota Australia, said that after the rumours of Toyota 86 discontinuation floating around, the manufacturer organised some internal meetings. An all-new version of the car will come soon, hinting that the 86 won’t demise any time now. The car is very much crucial for the company, and the new model will be slotted under the Supra.
Answering the question about the Toyota 86’s successor, he said that Toyota Australia has seen it and will bring it to the market soon. However, these give rest to the speculations that it will make way for the four-cylinder Supra to become the most affordable sports car from Toyota.
Also, it has been leaked that the manufacturer can bring back the nameplates like MR2 and Celica which were used earlier. However, Toyota has not decided until now whether or not it will go for the previously used nameplates.
For now, it is confirmed that the two auto giants, Subaru and Toyota, will continue their partnership to provide new generations cars. The all-new 86 will be equipped with flat-four-engine, identical to the Ascent’s turbocharged mill. The Ascent’s engine can produce a maximum of 260 hp power and the peak torque sticks at 375 Nm. To make the handling machines sharper, the centre of gravity will be lowered.
The existing Toyota 86 might get a special edition model to bid farewell. It will get the GR moniker for the automaker’s Gazoo Racing performance division.
