Upcoming Lepas cars in Malaysia: A closer look at the L8, L6 and L4

After re-entering the Malaysian market in 2023, Chery Group has made great progress in just three years. The company initially established its local presence with its core Chery brand before expanding its portfolio with additional brands - Omoda, Jaecoo, Jetour and iCaur to capture a larger share of the market. 

Well, one more brand that falls under the same umbrella will soon be making its way to Malaysia. We are talking about LEPAS, which is Chery Group’s latest marque established in 2025 for global markets.

Lepas Malaysia social media handles have been up and running for months, generating buzz among enthusiasts and potential buyers. The brand has also announced its network expansion strategy for the local market, and was initially expected to launch in the first half of 2026. However, that timeline has now passed, with the launch now expected in the remaining half of the year.

Backed by Chery Group’s world-class R&D and engineering, Lepas’ global lineup includes three models - L8, L6, and L4. These models underpin the Chery NEV (New Energy Vehicle) platform that can support multiple powertrain options and accommodate diverse sizes. 

Last month, Lepas Malaysia previewed the L4 EV, L6 and L8 at an event held at the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club, and these models are expected to make their way to Malaysia soon. Let’s take a closer look at each model, one by one. 

Lepas L8

• The Lepas L8 is a D-segment family-oriented flagship SUV, powered by a Lepas Super Hybrid system, a plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to Chery Super Hybrid (CSH), which promises to offer both energy efficiency and range.
• The plug-in hybrid setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of generating 143 PS and 215 Nm and an electric motor tuned to make 204 PS and 310 Nm. The combined system output is rated at 275 PS and 365 Nm. 
• Paired with a BYD-sourced 18.3 kWh LFP battery, the Lepas L8 offers a pure electric range of 90 km and a combined range of 1,200 km.
• The upcoming L8 measures 4,688 mm in length, 1,871 mm in width and 1,694 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. 
• Underpinning the brand’s "Leopard Aesthetics" design philosophy, the SUV combines elegant styling with practical functionality 
• Inside, it incorporates a two-row, five-seat layout, ensuring ample passenger space at the rear. 
• The cockpit features a human-centred layout with a soft and upscale ambience, a 13.2-inch central portrait-style touchscreen infotainment system and several thoughtful features, enhancing comfort and convenience. 

Lepas L6

• The Lepas L6 is a C-segment SUV that focuses more on comfort, style, and technology, targeting urban professionals and families.
• The SUV measures 4,570 mm in length, 1,852 mm in width and 1,683 mm in height, and has a 2,700-mm long wheelbase. The boot capacity is measured at 435 litres.
• It features a coupe-SUV-inspired profile with a low and wide stance, sculpted bodywork, “Hunting Eye” headlights, 19-inch wheels, and a full-width tail light unit.
• Inside, it gets a wraparound dashboard layout with a three-spoke steering wheel and a full-width air vent design.
• Other interior highlights: a 13.2-inch portrait infotainment unit, a digital instrument cluster, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, ambient lighting and power-adjustable seats. 
• It is expected to arrive in pure ICE and PHEV forms. While the plug-in hybrid setup remains the same as the L8 LSH, the conventional ICE model is equipped with a  147 PS/225 Nm 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the front wheels.

Lepas L4 

• The Lepas L4 is a compact B-segment SUV that targets young urban buyers with its premium styling, decent range, and advanced tech features.
• Positioned below the L6, it measures 4,406 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height, spanning a 2,700-mm wheelbase. The boot capacity is measured at 452 litres.
• It also follows Lepas’s “Leopard Aesthetics” philosophy and features a sharp modern front fascia, sim LED headlights, L-shaped daytime running lights, and dual-tone alloy wheels.
• The Lepas E4 EV is powered by a single electric motor that generates a maximum power of 218 PS and a peak torque of 275 Nm. 
• Feeding the motor is a 65.05 kWh battery pack, which offers a driving range of up to 500 km. It supports DC fast charging from 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes.
• In terms of features, it is packed with a 13.2-inch portrait infotainment touchscreen, a digital instrument display, physical air-conditioning controls, a 50-watt Qi wireless charger, and a full suite of ADAS systems.
