Volvo Cars recognized for its sustainability & climate change efforts

KUALA LUMPUR: Global environmental non-profit charity, CDP, has recognized Volvo Cars for its sustainability efforts. The automaker has secured an A-score rating by the organization for its actions pertaining to becoming a climate-neutral company via cutting emissions and minimizing climate risks.

With its A-Score, Volvo is now placed in the highest tier of CDP’s climate change list, a spot that only a few global companies have achieved. Making the achievement more special is the fact that more than 13,000 companies from around the globe including Volvo disclosed data on their environmental risks, impacts, and opportunities. Thus, Volvo Cars high score reflects its standing as a leader in climate change and environmental ambition.

Anders Kärrberg, head of global sustainability at Volvo Cars said, “We are very proud to see that our hard work to cut emissions and becoming climate neutral is being recognized by CDP.” He further added, “Receiving the prestigious A-score shows that we are on the right track, and hopefully we can inspire other companies to do even more.”

Time to shed some light on Volvo’s efforts in the field of climate change -

• The automaker plans to transform into a fully electric car company by 2030

• It has plans to roll out new-gen electric vehicles with the XC90 replacement scheduled for arrival in the coming months
• The company recognizes the benefits of switching the seat upholstery to non-animal material
• Volvo will partner with Northvolt to develop and manufacture sustainable batteries that will minimize carbon footprint. Factors like responsible sourcing of raw material and remanufacture/reuse batteries will be considered
• By producing batteries near its manufacturing facilities in Europe, Volvo would reduce the environmental footprint caused due to battery sourcing

Not to forget, Volvo is building a new Gigafactory in Europe that will be powered by 100 percent clean energy. It would employ almost 3000 workers with production commencing from 2026.

On a similar note, at the recently concluded UN Climate Change Conference COP26, Volvo Cars became the first automotive company to announce an internal carbon price, thus ensuring all its future projects are sustainable.
