Volvo recalls over 40,000 EX30 SUVs over a battery overheating issue
KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo Cars has issued a massive global recall notice for its award-winning electric SUV, the EX30, as reported by Reuters. The recall programme concerns the EV’s battery overheating issue that could lead to fire risks.

The Volvo EX30 recall involves a total of 40,323 units, including Single-Motor Extended Range and Twin-Motor Performance variants. The affected vehicles are equipped with high-voltage battery cells manufactured by Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Co, a joint venture backed by Volvo’s parent company Geely.

“We are now contacting the owners of all affected cars to advise them of the next steps,” Volvo said in a statement.
The automaker has committed to replacing the affected high-voltage battery packs at no cost to the owners. The replacement is estimated to cost the company around $195 million (RM 760 million), though the overall impact might be bigger than that if the issue affects the reputed brand known for its safety.
Speaking of the temporary safety measures, Volvo has advised EV owners to park their vehicles away from buildings and limit the charging to up to 70% until the issue is resolved.
Volvo EX30 in Malaysia
Volvo EX30 made its way to Malaysia in September 2024 as the brand’s smallest SUV, which is ‘big on tech, big on safety,’ perfect for those seeking a luxury and eco-friendly drive. It is offered in two variants here - Ultra and Ultra Twin Performance, priced at RM 208,888 and RM 228,888, respectively.
As of now, Volvo Car Malaysia has not issued any official statement regarding whether locally sold EVs are impacted by the recall.
