New BMW I3 EV breaks cover - Neue Klasse platform, AWD, 900 km range
KUALA LUMPUR: For over five decades, the BMW 3 Series has been known for its sporty driving pleasure, attractive design and consistent advancement. Well, this German icon has now entered the electric era with the brand’s new Neue Klasse platform at its core, marking a significant technological leap.

Drivetrain, range and charging
The BMW i3 comes in 50 xDrive trim, powered by a dual-motor AWD setup generating a combined output of 469 hp and a peak torque of 645 Nm. It features the sixth-gen BMW eDrive technology, mated to the new BMW Panoramic iDrive and “Heart of Joy” system, taking driving pleasure to a new level.
The “Heart of Joy” high-performance computer system can process inputs up to ten times faster than in previous systems, promising improved acceleration, braking and steering. It works in tandem with three other superbrain computers and sets new standards for electric performance in its class.
Photo from BMWThe EV features an 800-volt electrical architecture with high-voltage batteries suitable for long journeys. While the automaker does not reveal the exact battery pack capacity, it confirmed the WLTP-claimed range of 900 km. The EV supports ultra-fast DC charging capacities of up to 400 kW, adding up to 400 km in just 10 minutes.

Introducing a modern "2.5-box" design, the sedan boasts an athletic, modern styling with a striking silhouette and new front, new rear, and new proportions. At the front, the kidney grille and twin headlights merge seamlessly and form an innovative light signature. Emphasising the EV’s sporty, wide stance are prominently flared wheel arches.
Size-wise, the new BMW i3 is 4,760 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,480 mm tall and spans a wheelbase of 2,897mm.

Built around electrification, the spacious driver-focused interior has a clear and minimalist design. Upfront, we can see a high-resolution 17.9-inch rhomboidal central display tilted towards the driver. It is powered by the new BMW Operating System X, offering a more personalised and intuitive experience than ever before.
Photo from BMWThe cabin is also equipped with an innovative edge-to-edge BMW Panoramic Vision, 3D Head-Up Display, and BMW Symbiotic Drive, the latter of which marks the beginning of a new era in assisted driving. Among the other key highlights are ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, an integrated AI assistant, Digital Key functionality, power-adjustable seats, and Level 2 ADAS.
With production set to begin in Munich in August 2026, the all-new BMW i3 is set to hit the global markets towards the end of the year.
