Recent Updates of Nissan Serena

Nissan Serena is 7-seater MPV which is quite luxurious and comfortable. It has a plethora of cabin space thanks to its large wheelbase. The captain seats in the middle row offer a great amount of comfort. The hands-free dual power sliding doors make getting in and out of the Serena easier. Serena’s unique two-piece headlamps and Nissan’s signature grille helps you to identify this MPV easily.

The Serena comes with Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM) with Intelligent Object Moving Detection (I-MOD) for added safety. The engine is a 2.0-litre S-Hybrid unit with 150 PS and 200 Nm assisted by a 2.6 PS/48 Nm ECO electric motor. The latest spy shots of the Serena reveal a possibility that this MPV could soon be available with an Impul kit which will make it look sportier. As of now, the Serena is available at a starting price of RM 131,800.

Launched back in 2016 in Japan, the all-new Nissan Serena S-Hybrid entered the Malaysian market in the mid of 2018. Nissan kept all of us waiting for this luxurious 7-seater MPV. The MPV market in the country is pretty crowded with various options available for purchase. And with the entry of the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid things are going to get more competitive. The new Serena S-Hybrid comes with Nissan’s MR20DD 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol engine with 150 PS and 200 Nm of torque along with a pulley-driver starter generator that adds a few extra Nm of torque. The new convenient features like hands-free dual power sliding door, 7 USB ports for charging your devices, etc. are welcomed with open arms. The starting price of the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid is RM 135,500.

Interior & Features

The interior of the Serena S-Hybrid has been designed to accommodate 7-people with ease. There is loads of space for each one of them. Nissan has provided captain seats in both the front and middle rows, whereas the last row gets normal large combined layout ones. This new design has enhanced the comfort level that on-borders can experience in the new Serena S-Hybrid.

The dashboard features an interesting design. It is mounted very low and hence the front visibility is great. The instrument cluster is placed a bit higher than the steering wheel and is spread out a bit more than the that of the usual cars. The quality of materials is very nice however, you would find a few plastic parts.

There are plenty of storage areas located throughout the cabin. Nissan has provided not two but seven USB charging ports. Getting in and out of the last row is not that difficult. There are roof-mounted AC vents for the passengers seated here. And they can even open the rear door with a click of a button. The boot space with all the seats abreast isn’t that great. If you want to carry more luggage, fold down the last row seats and to do is a bit asking process.

The new Nissan Serena S-Hybrid is a modern-looking MPV. Its front end is very eye-catching thanks to the split headlights and turn signals. The turn signals along with the LED daytime running lights are situated above the headlamp clusters. The headlamps feature projector lights and are in close proximity to the large grille.

The overall design of the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid is boxy but somehow it manages to carry it with style. The side profile feels very up-market and premium courtesy the body-colored cladding. The A-pillar has got a unique split design to allow clear visibility to the driver. How Nissan managed to pull this off without compromising the structural rigidity we don’t know. Moving towards the rear of the van, we get to see the black glass that covers the D-pillar and gives a floating-roof kind of appearance. The tail light cluster sits vertically and unfortunately doesn’t get LED lighting. There is also some chrome embellishment on the tailgate to keep things interesting.

Ride & Handling

The ride quality of the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid is very comfortable thanks to the softer suspension setup. It glides over bumps and minor undulations with ease. However, the steering feels a bit slow and sluggish. And of course, it is not meant to be driven like a sports car.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

It can be both advantageous and disadvantageous that Nissan opted to use the same MR20DD 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that was powering the previous model. Advantageous in the sense that it is a reliable and trustworthy engine that has been handling this massive MPV pretty well in the past. On the other hand, this thing could prove to be a disadvantage as Nissan could have incorporated a new more powerful and refined engine. Anyway, the 2.0-litre engine produces 150 PS of max power and 200 Nm of torque and it is coupled to a pulley-driver starter generator that has the capacity to add 2.6 PS power and 48 Nm of torque but only for a second.

The performance of this engine is quite impressive considering the fact that it has to maintain an MPV. It is very smooth to operate and the CVT gearbox provides seamless shifts. Drive this thing in a sane manner and you would always be impressed by its performance.

Braking & Safety

The Serena S-Hybrid comes with six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). There is also a 360-degree camera view that can be seen on the digital display of the instrument cluster. This allows you to park the MPV in tight parking spaces with ease.

If you are in the market looking for a comfortable 7-seater family MPV, then the Nissan Serena S-Hybrid would fit your hunt perfectly. It looks great, has a good interior, drivers very well, is very spacious, and has a few convenient features. There are two variants of this MPV available in Malaysia starting at a price of RM 131,800.
