2021 MG Marvel R Electric unveiled, European launch set for May 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: MG unveiled the new electric duo for the European market, the Marvel R Electric SUV, and the MG 5 Electric compact estate. The automaker first revealed the Marvel R in May 2020 as a Roewe-badged concept. Well, it has now been transformed into a luxurious high-tech lifestyle C-segment SUV that will take on the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan Ariya and recently-showcased Kia EV6.

According to MG, the new Marvel R Electric is an intelligent ‘Tech Style’ vehicle with all-modern and powerful elements as it communicates and interacts with its users. The SUV’s design features attractive proportions and minimalistic design elements like an angular front grille with matrix-style headlights tucked into large apertures on either side. The leading edge of the SUV boasts slim LED daytime running lights. 

On the back, the tail lights are connected by a thin LED bar, along with creased character lines and a pair of vents at the rear bumper corners. Dimensionally, it is 4,674 mm long, 1,919 mm wide, 1,618 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.

Inside, the MG Marvel R looks stunning with premium styling cues and suitably modern technology, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 19.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

On the power front, MG Marvel R Electric equips a total of three electric motors; one at the front and two at the rear, combinedly delivering an output of 212 kW and a peak torque of 665 Nm. The generated power is enough to accelerate the SUV from standstill to 100 kmph in an impressive 4.9 seconds. The automaker also has plans to bring a rear-wheel-drive model of the SUV with two motors at the rear, however, it has not yet revealed any performance specifications of the RWD version.

The MG Marvel R driving range is rated at 400 km (according to WLTP). With the help of an 11-kW three-phase charger, the Marvel R’s batteries can be charged to 80 percent in just 30 minutes, says the automaker. As for safety, the midsize SUV gets a number of safe driver systems such as MG Pilot driver assistance and i-Booster braking assistance.

The MG Marvel R is due to go on sale in the European market from May 2021, however, there is no information about its price at the moment.
