MG4X electric SUV unveiled in China with semi-solid state tech

KUALA LUMPUR: MG has introduced a new pure-electric SUV in the MG4 family, called the MG 4X (X signifies “infinite possibilities”). The automaker has released the official images and preliminary specifications for the EV, which represents the MG4’s EV platform transition into the popular crossover SUV segment. 

MG4X: What do we know so far?

• Positioned below the MG S5, the upcoming MG4X is a B-segment SUV set to lock horns with the BYD Atto 2.
• It underpins the same ‘Modular Scalable Platform’ and ‘E3’ electronic architecture as the upcoming second-gen MG4. 
• In terms of dimensions, the crossover SUV has the same 2,700 mm wheelbase as the hatchback; however, it is longer, wider, and taller, measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height.

• The MG4X features the semi-solid-state battery tech that was first introduced with the MG4 Anxin Edition last year. Semi-solid-state battery tech is widely tipped to be the next big thing for EVs as it uses both solid and liquid electrolytes to move ions and is supposed to be safer, more thermally stable, and more energy-dense than traditional batteries.
• It is likely to get the same 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion unit as the hatchback sibling, offering a CLTC-rated driving range of 510 km. It replenishes from 30 to 80% in approximately 21 minutes. 
• In terms of design, the SUV adopts the MG4 design language with SUV-exclusive styling bits. It boasts a new full-width front LED bar, an illuminated MG logo, a sporty bumper, higher ground clearance, and full-width tail lights.

• No interior images are yet revealed; however, the automaker confirmed that the EV will come equipped with a smart cockpit co-developed with Oppo. 
• As for driver assistance, it will feature high-speed Navigate on Pilot, automated parking functions, and other advanced systems, claimed to offer the best experience in its price segment.

Further details about the MG4X electric SUV are likely to be revealed closer to launch.
