9th gen iDrive infotainment operating system to debut soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Two years back BMW launched the iDrive 8.0 system and now it’s time for an upgrade. This year, the automaker will debut the iDrive 9.0 infotainment operating system.

Here are the key details about the upcoming iDrive 9.0 infotainment operating system -

• Unlike the previous gen operating system, the iDrive 9.0 will forgo the Linux-based operating system for an Android-based package. The latest BMW says will offer faster and more seamless operational capabilities
• A new ‘content-driven’ interface will replace the current tile-based home screen
• It’ll come with voice-based functionality and feature an updated touchscreen interface

• Part of the new Android-based operating system will be a new app store function
• Over-the-air software updates and 5G connectivity will provide ease of functionality to the consumer
• Digital air-conditioning controls have been extensively reworked and simplified for the new operating system

The iDrive 9.0 operating system will first feature in the second-gen X2 before rolling out to other models like the 2 Series Active Tourer and the all-new X1.

In addition, the upcoming MINI models are also reported to benefit from the new iDrive 9.0 system, however, with a MINI-specific interface.
