BMW Malaysia's first Neue Klasse model to be unveiled on 6 August 2026: expect the new iX3
KUALA LUMPUR: Mark it down. BMW Group Malaysia will introduce the first model from its Neue Klasse portfolio on Thursday, 6 August 2026. No name, no price, no spec sheet yet, just the date.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When is BMW Malaysia launching its first Neue Klasse model?
BMW Group Malaysia will introduce the first model from its Neue Klasse portfolio on Thursday, 6 August 2026.Which car will be BMW Malaysia's first Neue Klasse model?
The second generation iX3 is the most likely candidate, with the long wheelbase iX3 L the other possibility. Malaysia has been listed among the markets selected for the iX3 L.That sounds like standard teaser fare until you look at the name itself. Neue Klasse is German for "new class", which is about as generic as a label gets if you don not know your BMW history.
BMW has been building cars for over a century and has pulled this one out exactly twice. That is the part worth paying attention to. The company doesn't attach it to a facelift or a new engine. It attaches it to a reset.

Through most of the 1950s, BMW's showroom was a strange place. At the top sat the 501, 502 and 503, expensive, low volume and slow selling. At the bottom sat the Isetta, the 600 and the 700, microcars running motorcycle engines. There was nothing in between, which happens to be where most people actually buy cars.
The BMW 1500 fixed that. It landed at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1961, drawn up by BMW design chief Wilhelm Hofmeister working with Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, and it looked nothing like the fussy, formal 501 and 502 that came before. Clean surfaces, sensible proportions, no decoration for the sake of it. The twin kidney grille stayed because that was already non negotiable. One new detail did stick, though: the kick in the rear side window where the roofline meets the C pillar, which the industry still calls the Hofmeister kink 65 years later.
Underneath was the serious part. A brand new four cylinder engine, independent suspension all round and unitary body construction, which made the 1500 one of the more advanced things in its class at the time.
Frankfurt reacted well. Crowds gathered, orders piled up, and BMW had to build a new production hall in Munich and hire roughly 3,000 skilled workers to keep up. Production started in 1962.
Here's the bit most retellings get wrong. Nobody called it the Neue Klasse in 1961. The name only stuck in 1963, once the more powerful BMW 1800 joined the lineup and the sedans needed a collective identity.
BMW's board member for sales at the time, Paul Hahnemann, described them as an entirely "new class" of BMW, and the phrase migrated into the company's advertising a year later. As BMW Group Classic spokesperson Marc Thiesbürger has put it, BMW believed it had created "a new class that was unique and unmatched."

The 1500 was followed by the 1600, the 1800 and the 2000, each pushing the same idea a little further: a sports sedan you could actually live with, built on the assumption that driving ought to be enjoyable rather than merely functional.
What they really did was set a template. Proportions, dynamics, the way a BMW is supposed to feel from behind the wheel. Thiesbürger calls it the "rediscovery of the medium sports sedan category", pulling back the sporting streak that ran through the 326, 327/28 and 328 in the 1930s and making it modern, affordable and, crucially, buildable in volume. The tagline "Aus Freude am Fahren", or "For the pleasure of driving", came out of this same period, which was really just BMW writing down what the cars were already doing.
The numbers back it up. BMW tripled its car sales between 1960 and 1970 and grew vehicle revenue more than sevenfold over the same stretch. Close to 340,000 Neue Klasse sedans were built between February 1962 and January 1972. That money funded sales subsidiaries in the United States, France and the United Kingdom, which is how BMW stopped being a German company and started being a global one.

In 1966 came a two door version derived from the 1600, lighter and cheaper than the sedans it borrowed from. One journalist of the era summed it up as "a sports car in a Sunday suit." The 02 Series badge arrived in 1968 with the BMW 2002, the numeral marking out the two door cars from the four door Neue Klasse sedans. By the time it wrapped up in 1977, around 825,000 had been built.
For Malaysia this is the interesting chapter. The 2002 got here through private and grey channels well before BMW had any official presence in the country, which means plenty of Malaysian enthusiasts formed an opinion about the brand years before the brand formally showed up. That reputation did a lot of quiet work.
BMW Group Classic traces both the 3 Series and the 5 Series straight back to this era. The first 3 Series, launched in 1975, grew out of the 02 Series, while the 1972 5 Series took over directly from the Neue Klasse sedans. Both have been fixtures in the Malaysian market for decades, and both owe their character to one mid size sedan shown in Frankfurt in 1961.
Why the name came back
The original run ended in January 1972 and the badge went into storage for nearly 50 years. BMW brought it back in March 2021 at the BMW Group Annual Conference, which was not a product announcement so much as a statement of intent.
The plan behind it is genuinely large. BMW says the Neue Klasse will reshape its entire product portfolio, with more than 40 new and updated models between now and 2027, built around electrification, digitalisation and circularity, and backed by a technology open approach rather than a single powertrain bet.

BMW Group Malaysia hasn't confirmed which model goes first, but the shortlist is short. The second generation iX3 already has a Malaysian product page and has been through its regional launch in Thailand, priced there at THB 3.599 million for the single 50 xDrive M Sport variant, roughly RM432,000 at current rates.
The long wheelbase iX3 L, revealed at Auto China earlier this year, is the other candidate, and Malaysia has been named among its selected markets.
On price, don't expect the old iX3's numbers. That car ran from about RM299,800 to RM336,360 before it bowed out. A CBU Neue Klasse iX3 realistically starts with a four, somewhere in the RM400,000 region, unless BMW Malaysia does something clever with local assembly in Kulim down the line. Treat that as an estimate until BMW says otherwise.
Photo by Adam AubreyWhatever it is, it will be walking into a crowded room. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Audi Q6 e-tron and Porsche Macan Electric all sit in similar territory, and Malaysian buyers in this bracket have never had more to compare against.
The reveal is on 6 August 2026, and given the weight BMW attaches to the Neue Klasse name, it would be strange if the company undersold it.
Managing director Benjamin Nagel has already called 2026 "a transformative year for BMW Group Malaysia" on the back of the Neue Klasse rollout. We will be there when it goes on sale in Malaysia, so check back for the full local specification and pricing.
