BMW NOT Launching a “Super Car” to Mark its 100th Anniversary

Kuala Lumpur: Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) is turning 100 next year, joining the list of other automobile manufacturers that have celebrated their iconic centennial including Aston Martin, Renault, Opel, and Peugeot. It was rumored that the BMW will launch an all-new supercar to mark its 100th anniversary but those rumors have now turned out to be false as the the BMW Development Boss, Klaus Fröhlich has confirmed that the German luxury automaker is not celebrating its 100th anniversary with the launch of a “supercar” that will be powered by a V8 or V10 engine.

Fröhlich was speaking to German site Auto Motor and Sport. He also made it clear that BMW will never shy away from unveiling a sports car in the future. “All-electric supercar is well within the realms of possibility, akin to Audi’s R8 e-tron. This is subject to the development of battery technology, where major leaps are expected in the coming years,” he added

In the exact sense of the word, the German automaker would prefer to wait for the arrival of the ultra-modern batteries that could be smaller, lighter and more powerful, before taking the decision of launching a supercar in the future. “The (battery) storage technology has yet to be significantly developed, so I do not want to drive a car that feels like a two and a half ton truck,” he explained.

Automakers often release one-make or limited-edition models to celebrate a significant milestone in the company history. For instance, Aston Martin, unveiled the one-off CC100 Speedster Concept to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013. The German automaker, Mercedes-Benz have also released a special edition version of its CL550 dubbed the “100 Years of Mercedes-Benz Edition” to mark their iconic centennial.
