Bosch Tech Day 2024: Software is revolutionising Innovation

KUALA LUMPUR:  At the recent Bosch Tech Day 2024, the company showcased how software is transforming every aspect of its business. Bosch aims to generate billions in sales from software by the end of the decade, with over 48,000 associates involved in software engineering, including 42,000 in the Mobility sector.

Dr. Stefan Hartung, Bosch's chairman, emphasized the importance of software in their products, stating it improves customers' lives. Bosch's software can be found in various fields, from industrial production lines to medical equipment and automotive safety features.

The software in their products is technology that is ‘Invented for life,’ improving their customers’ lives, said Hartung. The company is already seeing substantial success, having generated nearly 4 billion euros in sales from modern vehicle computers over the past three years.

Dr. Markus Heyn, a member of Bosch's board and chairman of the Mobility sector, highlighted the transformative potential of software in the automotive industry. He noted that future vehicles will be seamlessly integrated into the digital world, receiving updates over the air to keep them current. This technology will also extend to trucks, motorbikes, and e-bikes.

Bosch's role extends beyond automotive software. The company's expertise in mobility, manufacturing, and building technology makes it a valuable partner for leading IT firms. Hartung mentioned the importance of partnerships and open-source software in harnessing the full potential of software and AI.

The automotive industry is moving towards software-defined vehicles, with a McKinsey study predicting the global market for automotive software and electronics will reach $462 billion by 2030. Bosch is positioning itself to be a major player in this market, offering solutions like Vehicle Health for fleet operators and the Bosch L.OS digital platform for logistics companies.

Bosch's advancements include the "eBrake to Zero" function, which ensures smooth, jolt-free braking, and a new vehicle computer developed with Qualcomm that combines infotainment and driver assistance functions, reducing costs and installation space.

Bosch's subsidiary ETAS provides middleware that enables communication between a vehicle's physical components and application software, ensuring compatibility across different suppliers. "In the future, there won’t be any cars on the road that do not feature lines of Bosch code," concluded Hartung.
