Chery launches supply chain synergy programme to boost Malaysia’s EV Industry

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery Corporate Malaysia and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) have officially launched the Chery Premier Supply Chain Synergy Programme, an initiative that aims to strengthen Malaysia’s position in the electric vehicle (EV) and automotive supply chain across the ASEAN region.

Chery introduced plans for its upcoming Smart Auto Industrial Park in the Beringin High-Tech Auto Valley, which will serve as a major EV manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia.The event, held recently at MIDA’s headquarters, was supported by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii).

The programme brought together 12 major Chery Technology suppliers from China and 23 Malaysian vendors, with a shared objective of boosting localisation, enabling technology transfer, and supporting Malaysia’s National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020.
According to MIDA CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, “This inaugural programme directly supports our commitment to fostering collaboration between Malaysian vendors and Chery China. By fostering these vital links, we envision a future rich with technology transfer, streamlined supply chains, and enhanced industrial capabilities.”
The initiative is also seen as a move to prepare Malaysia for the increasing demand for next-generation vehicles (NxGVs) and smart mobility solutions. Leo Chen, Executive Vice President of Chery Corporate Malaysia, said that the programme reflects Chery’s broader commitment to localisation and long-term investment in Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem.

“By working hand in hand with local suppliers to foster sustainable growth and resilience, we aim to ensure that suppliers from both Malaysia and China benefit mutually through the strategic exchange of knowledge and technology in automotive engineering and advanced manufacturing,” he said.
A key part of Chery’s long-term strategy includes the upcoming Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park, which was previewed during the launch. Set to be located in the Beringin High-Tech Auto Valley, the facility will serve as a key regional manufacturing hub for the brand’s EV and smart mobility operations.
The event also saw the signing of four strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between key Malaysian and Chinese partners. Wuhu Atech Automotive Electronics Co., Ltd signed with Multi-Code Electronics Industries (M) Bhd, while Cheling Smart Mobility Technology (Wuhu) Co., Ltd also entered into an MoU with Multi-Code.
Meanwhile, Zhejiang Wanliyang Co., Ltd and Wuhu Qida Power Battery Systems Co., Ltd formalised agreements with Chery Corporate Malaysia. These collaborations cover areas including automotive electronics, battery systems, technology transfer, and joint investments.
As the EV transition gains momentum globally, initiatives like this position Malaysia to become a more competitive and innovation-driven player in the regional automotive landscape—not just in assembly, but also across critical areas of component supply, research and development, and industrial upskilling.
