Chery Omoda E5 bookings open in Malaysia; est. price announced

KUALA LUMPUR: The electric vehicle market in Malaysia is set to welcome a new entrant in the form of the Chery Omoda E5. It is an all-electric version of the Omoda 5 and is slated to hit the local market in March this year. Well, ahead of that, the Chinese automaker has started accepting its bookings and revealed its specifications.

The five-seater Omoda E5 measures 4,400 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1600 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 2,630 mm. The boot capacity is measured at 483 litres. Chery Malaysia offers the EV in four exterior colour options - Aqua Green, Khaki White, Phantom Grey, and Dark Black.

Powering the upcoming Chery EV is a single electric motor generating a maximum power of 204 PS and a peak torque of 340 Nm. The grunt is enough to propel the car from zero to 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 172 kmph.

The motor is linked to a 61 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which offers a cruising range of  430 km (on the WLTP cycle). As for charging, the battery supports both AC and DC charging. The 80kW Max DC charger juices it up from 0%-80% in just 40 mines while the 9.9kW Max AC takes 8 hours for the same job.

The design of the Omoda E5 closely mirrors that of its ICE-powered counterpart, featuring a few EV-specific enhancements like a closed-off front grille, unique bumpers with automatic cooling shutters, aerodynamically focused wheels, and a front-mounted charging port. 

In terms of creature comforts, it will come equipped with a 24.6-inch Super Large curved screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, 50W wireless smartphone charging, 8-speaker Sony audio system, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, a 3.3 kW vehicle-to-load functionality, and ADAS 2.5 advanced driver assistance kit.

The highly-anticipated Chery Omoda E5 will be making its way into Chery showrooms nationwide, starting this weekend (24 Feb). The price of the EV is estimated at RM 160,000.

Once launched, the Chery Omoda E5 will go up against the BYD Atto 3, GWM Ora Good Cat, Kia Niro, Nissan Leaf, and Hyundai Kona Electric.
