Electric Vehicle Sales Figure to Reach 5.5 Million Mark by 2025

Kuala Lumpur: JATO, which is one of the world’s leading authorities on vehicle sales and data has published a report regarding the current trends and future expectations of electric cars. This report is dubbed as “From Fiction to Reality The Evolution of Electric Vehicles 2013-2015″ and depicts that this electric car segment is still very much in the introduction phase of the commercial lifecycle. The reason for this is lack of charging infrastructure and limitation of choice as well as range.

In spite of these problems, the collected data of past 24 months suggest positive signs and hints towards a bright future of electric vehicles. Between 2013 and 2014, the global car market experienced just 4% hike, but demand for electric and plug-in hybrids jumped a huge 43%. While the worldwide auto market marked a sales figure of 72 million last year, electric vehicles got a small share of 280,000 units worldwide. But even as the market for traditional cars seems to slow down, the market for electric vehicles is continuously expanding. JATO has forecasted that by the end of 2015, electric vehicles segment could get a share of almost 1% (0.96%) of total European car sales and 0.54% of total North American sales.

Talking about the brands, Nissan continues to be the world’s leading electric vehicle automaker with its model LEAF. Being a global leader, Nissan accounted for 24% of all electric vehicle sales globally followed by Mitsubishi with a share of 14% and Tesla in the third position, Volkswagen in fourth and BMW’s i3 taking fifth place. In coming years, Japanese brands would be overtaken by European brands with direct competition coming from domestically built Chinese electric cars. The Chinese automaker BAIC's E-Series recorded a sales figure of 8,000 units this year which made it the eighth most popular electric car in the world. JATO expects the total electric cars sales figure to reach 700,000 by the end of 2016 and 5.5 million by 2025 with China being the global leader.
