Honda bags Best Road Safety Partner award at ASEAN NCAP 10th anniversary celebration

KUALA LUMPUR: The ninth new car assessment program in the world, the ASEAN NCAP, has completed 10 years of its existence. And to celebrate this milestone, ASEAN NCAP together with the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) organized an event in Kajang, Malaysia yesterday. 

For the last ten years, ASEAN NCAP is involved in the independent assessment of the safety performance of new passenger cars released in the ASEAN market. Its main function is to enhance vehicle safety standards and rating systems in the region. 

So far, the agency has tested around 110 models and variants and has released 137 ratings. To assess the safety, it has developed three roadmaps viz. 2012-2016, 2017-2020, and 2021-2025. The latest one covers four assessment domains, including Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Safety Assist, and Motorcyclist Safety. 

“The establishment of ASEAN NCAP has produced a significant impact on vehicle safety aspects in Malaysia, including the installation of at least two airbags in new vehicles, stability control, autonomous emergency braking and, most importantly, the emphasis on Blind Spot Technology (BST) to detect the presence of motorcycles, [along with> other technologies that are expected to help in reducing collisions and crashes on the road,” said the ministry of transport director secretary-general Datuk Razali bin Mohamad.

During the event, ASEAN NCAP also announced the Decade of Safer Vehicle awards to commemorate the vehicle safety achievements of the automakers. The winners are -

• Best Adult Occupant Protection 2012 to 2016 – Nissan Teana
• Best Adult Occupant Protection 2017 to 2020 – Toyota C-HR
• Best Safety Assist 2017 – Perodua Myvi
• Best Safety Assist 2018 – Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
• Best Safety Assist 2019 – Toyota Granvia / Majesty / Hiace Super Grandia
• Best Safety Assist 2020 – Isuzu mu-X
• Best Forward Facing Child Occupant Protection 2012 to 2016 – Nissan Teana
• Best Forward Facing Child Occupant Protection 2017 to 2020 – Honda Accord
• Safety Technology Award – Honda Civic - AEB for Motorcycle
• Excellent Award for Consistent 5-Star Rating: Honda City
• Excellent Award for Consistent 5-Star Rating: Honda Civic
• Most 5-Star Cars 2012 to 2016 – Honda
• Most 5-Star Cars 2012 to 2016 – Nissan
• Most 5-Star Cars 2017 to 2020 – Toyota

“The Decade of Safer of Vehicle Award is our way of giving credits where it is due and also provides recognition to manufacturers who have consistently adhering to our protocol to ensure that their vehicles obtained 5-Star ratings. My wish is that the Award serves as a catalyst to encourage other manufacturers to continuously research and improve their respective vehicles by putting safety first in the development of the cars,” said MIROS Director-General and ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General and Acting Chairman, Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim.
