MG Cyberster electric sports car teased ahead of March 31 debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Last year, MG revealed the design sketches of the wild pure-electric MG Cyberster and left the auto-enthusiasts with tons of excitement and anticipation. Now as the roadster EV moves towards its March 31 global debut, the automaker has released its new teaser images, showcasing some of the interior highlights for the first time.

The upcoming convertible EV has been designed at MG’s parent company SAIC's London-based design studio. As revealed in the images, the sports car will have a long low nose and angular features giving it a striking shape. The twin rear flying supports, central spline, aggressive air dam, and front splitter suggest some tricky aerodynamics honed for super performance. Other notable highlights comprise streamlined bodywork, a rakish windscreen, and huge turbine-style wheels.

According to MG, the Cyberster’s silhouette took reference from the classic MG B from 1960. It stated: "The exterior design of this concept embodies the balance of startling aesthetics and romanticism. The interior is deeply considered with mechanical performance and smart technology, which constructed an unprecedented super-sensory virtual space."

The MG Cyberster will have a futuristic interior boasting a freestanding digital instrument cluster that seems to get displays for digital side mirrors. A W-shaped steering wheel with video game-type controls is also visible in the teaser. The sports car is also likely to get 5G connectivity technology and Level 3 autonomous driving systems.

As of now, there are no official details on how much power the upcoming Cyberster sports car will generate, but the speculations hover around twin electric motors with a four-wheel-drive set-up from the E-Motion concept car revealed by the company in 2017. At that time. MG claimed that the setup is capable of delivering a range of 310 miles with a century sprint of less than 4 seconds. The E-Motion concept was based on a modular EV architecture created by SAIC, so the possibilities of the Cyberstar using the same underpinnings are high.

Set to preview next month, the MG Cyberster could go head-to-head with the Porsche Boxster EV and Tesla Roadster after launch.
