Mk8 Volkswagen Golf makes its official debut, loaded with new technologies

KUALA LUMPUR: With more than 35 million units, the Volkswagen Golf is one of the best-selling cars worldwide. It was introduced back in the mid-1970s, and now the carmaker has revealed the eighth-generation of the hot hatch. By the first look, anyone can make out that it has been redesigned inside and out. The dimensions of the latest generation Golf have been slightly modified compared to the outgoing Mk7.5.

The Mk8 Golf now comes with a wheelbase of 2,636 mm and measures 4,284 mm in length, 1,456 mm tall, and 1,789 mm wide. It retains the multi-link rear and MacPherson strut front suspension setup and rides on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. With the redesigned front and rear ends, it seems that the German carmaker preferred to go with an evolutionary approach instead of a revolutionary one for the styling of the 2020 Golf.

The front grille that holds the brand’s logo is much slimmer now and is flanked by sleek LED headlamps. It now comes with a J-shaped integrated LED DRLs that also work as the turn signal indicators. Moving to the rear-end of the 2020 Golf, smaller sized two-piece headlamps are positioned along with a slight kink. The taillamp is also revamped, which now helps in offering a larger boot space. There are five hybrid drive systems offered in the car that include three mild hybrid options. These mild-hybrid powertrains operate on a 48-volt tech, which flaunts a belt starter generator.

There is a plethora of technology equipped in the new Golf; it now gets Travel Assist that enables the lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control that can aid driving at speeds of up to 210 kmph. Other features include a windscreen-projected head-up display, latest MIB3 infotainment system, parking assistance system, Car-to-X Communication, and more.
