KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota Motor has officially launched three battery-electric vehicles in Malaysia today, the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Toyota bZ4X and Toyota Hilux BEV, marking their first serious push into the local EV space than what we’ve seen from the brand so far.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is priced at RM198,000, the Toyota bZ4X at RM220,000, and the Toyota Hilux BEV at RM226,300, all OTR without insurance for Peninsular Malaysia.
  • What is the range of the Toyota Urban Cruiser, bZ4X and Hilux BEV?

All three models also come with a 5-year vehicle warranty and an 8-year battery electric vehicle warranty, with an optional 9th- and 10th-year extended EV warranty listed at RM5,700.

The Urban Cruiser now becomes Toyota’s most affordable EV in Malaysia, sitting below the bZ4X by RM22,000, while the Hilux BEV arrives as the most expensive model of the three, though only by RM6,300 over the bZ4X.

    Toyota Urban Cruiser in Malaysia

Positioned in the B-SUV segment, the new Toyota Urban Cruiser is imported from India and is pitched as a more compact but still fairly premium EV SUV.

Toyota says it was developed under a “Sophisticated Versatile Cruiser” concept, and for Malaysia it gets a 128 kW (174 PS) front-mounted motor producing 193 Nm of torque.

Power comes from a 61.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, good for a claimed 426 km of range on a full charge. DC fast charging from 15% to 80% takes 50 minutes at 67kW, while a full AC charge at 7 kW takes 9.5 hours.

Dimensionally, the Urban Cruiser measures 4,285 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall, riding on a 2,700 mm wheelbase which puts it around the size of the Perodua Traz.

It rides on 18-inch wheels with 225/55R18 tyres, and Toyota is offering it in Pearl Arctic White, Pearl Bluish Black, Grandeur Grey and Land Breeze Green.

Inside, the Urban Cruiser gets a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, plus wireless smartphone connectivity, a JBL audio system, a glass roof, ambient lighting, sliding rear seats, and a flexible rear bench with 40:20:40 split-folding backrests. Boot space varies from 238 litres to 562 litres, depending on rear seat position and configuration.

Toyota has also given it a fairly complete safety suite, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Prevention, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive High Beam System, a 360-degree camera, and 7 SRS airbags.

    Toyota bZ4X in Malaysia

Sitting above the Urban Cruiser is the updated Toyota bZ4X, which remains the brand’s flagship EV offering here. Local output is listed at 167 kW(227PS), and Toyota Malaysia confirms that the front-mounted motor makes 269 Nm of torque.

It is paired with a 73.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a claimed range of up to 525 km on a full charge. Toyota also quotes up to 150 kW DC charging, which can bring the battery to 80% in around 30 minutes, while AC charging is supported at up to 22 kW.

The bZ4X rides on Toyota’s dedicated e-TNGA EV platform, with the battery mounted low in the chassis to improve rigidity and lower the centre of gravity. Toyota also claims a drag coefficient of 0.27 Cd, helped by its aerodynamic bodywork and fully covered underbody.

For Malaysia, the bZ4X comes with 20-inch wheels wrapped in 235/50R20 tyres, and five exterior colours, namely Precious Metal, Attitude Black MC, Emotional Red, Dark Blue MC and Platinum White Pearl MC.

Inside, the flagship EV gets a 14-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch driver display, ventilated power-adjustable front seats, a panoramic glass roof, nanoeX air purification, and ambient lighting with 64 selectable colours.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, with kit including Pre-Collision System, Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Adaptive High Beam System, Blind Spot Monitor, Parking Support Brake, Safe Exit Assist, Road Sign Assist and Intelligent Parking Assist, plus a Panoramic View Monitor and 8 airbags.

    Toyota Hilux BEV in Malaysia

The most attention-grabbing launch of the three is easily the Toyota Hilux BEV, one of the first pickup truck electric vehicles in Malaysia.

Built in Thailand, the Hilux BEV is described by Toyota as its first global retail pick-up BEV, and unlike some earlier prototype efforts, this one is clearly being positioned as a proper production model for both fleet and private buyers. It retains a body-on-frame construction, just like the regular Hilux, and for Malaysia it arrives as a double-cab 4x4.

Power comes from front and rear eAxles producing 144 kW (196 PS) in total, with 206 Nm from the front motor and 267 Nm from the rear unit. It uses a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, supports up to 125 kW DC charging and 10 kW AC charging, with a 10% to 80% DC charge taking around 30 minutes and a 10% to 100% AC charge taking 6.5 hours. Toyota quotes a range of 315 km (NEDC).

The Hilux BEV measures 5,320 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,865 mm in height, with a 3,085 mm wheelbase. It rides on unique 17-inch alloy wheels, and colours available locally are Ash, Platinum White Pearl and Super White 2.

Inside, the electric pick-up gets a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital meter display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, combination leather upholstery, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and support for the Toyota Remote app for remote locking, vehicle location and service booking.

Toyota has also engineered it to preserve the Hilux’s utility and off-road credibility. Payload is quoted at 750 kg, water wading depth is maintained at 700 mm, and the rear uses a new de Dion rigid leafspring suspension setup. It is also the first Toyota BEV to get Multi-Terrain Select, with modes for rock, sand, mud, dirt, mogul, plus an auto setting.

Safety kit includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Auto High Beam, and a Panoramic View Monitor (Toyota Safety Sense 3).

Taken together, the Urban Cruiser, bZ4X and Hilux BEV show that Toyota is finally broadening its EV strategy in Malaysia in a more meaningful way.

Instead of relying on one halo product, the brand now has an electric compact SUV, a larger flagship SUV, and a pick-up truck for buyers who want something very different from the usual EV crowd.

The pricing is still far from mass-market, especially in the case of the Hilux BEV, but the range now covers a lot more ground than before. The Urban Cruiser should be the volume-oriented play, the bZ4X continues as the more polished flagship passenger EV, and the Hilux BEV is the wildcard that could attract both commercial users and private buyers who simply want an electric truck with real-world utility.
