Next-gen Toyota Fortuner undergoes testing in Thailand, spy shots hint at big updates

KUALA LUMPUR: After introducing the all-new ninth-gen Hilux late last year, Toyota is now gearing up to provide a generational upgrade to its SUV counterpart, the Fortuner. Yes, that’s correct; the next-gen Toyota Fortuner is in the works, with road testing already underway in Thailand.

The spy photos of the heavily camouflaged SUV have been circulating on the internet, revealing some notable changes and improvements over the outgoing model. 

Let’s dive deeper to know more about the upcoming Toyota Fortuner - 

New, modern styling 

The new Fortuner appears significantly updated in the spy shots, representing the brand’s new design take on rugged ladder-frame SUVs. Compared to the outgoing model, it boasts a stronger road presence with boxier proportions and an upright stance. 

The front design is likely to feature a larger grille and new split headlamps with thin daytime running lights placed higher, just like the new Hilux. The rear spy shots suggest a squared-off profile, potentially with new bumper contours and slimmer wraparound tail lights.

New platform 

The SUV is expected to underpin the latest version of the IMV ladder-frame platform, just like the new-gen Hilux. The new architecture will offer improved stability, ride comfort, and overall refinement, while retaining the same ruggedness.

Interior and tech upgrades

While there are no interior shots yet available for the next-gen Fortuner, we can expect some significant upgrades in this arena, with reference to the refreshed pickup truck and market reports. 

As per that, the SUV may possibly get a new 12.3-inch digital drive display and 12.3-inch infotainment unit with modern UI and improved connectivity. Other creature comforts that may come on board are wireless smartphone charging, better climate control enhancements, improved storage solutions, and more USB-C ports. 

Toyota Safety Sense

In terms of safety, it is most likely that the 2026 Toyota Fortuner will come equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS pack, as spy shots reveal radar hardware and cameras. Offering Level-2 ADAS capabilities, the Toyota Safety Sense suite combines features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Blind Spot Monitoring.

Drivetrain options 

For most global markets, Toyota is expected to offer the familiar 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel (with 48V mild hybrid assistance in some regions) engine options with the refreshed SUV. However, the future possibilities include BEV and FCEV versions as well. As for transmission, a 6-speed manual and a torque-converter automatic are likely to carry over. 

The next-gen Toyota Fortuner is expected to make its global debut by the end of this year.
