KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota has unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ, a compact off-roader that revives one of the brand’s most recognisable nameplates.

When will the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ be launched?
The Land Cruiser FJ is expected to go on sale in Japan around mid-2026, following its public debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo. Will the Land Cruiser FJ be available in Malaysia?
Toyota has yet to confirm export markets, but given that the FJ shares the IMV platform with models already sold and assembled in Malaysia (like the Hilux and Fortuner), there’s a realistic chance it could be introduced here if regional demand is strong.Set to go on sale in Japan around mid-2026, the FJ joins Toyota’s expanding Land Cruiser family as a smaller, more affordable alternative that still carries the same tough DNA.

The Land Cruiser nameplate dates back to 1951 with the original Toyota BJ — the first vehicle to climb to the sixth station of Mount Fuji. Since then, more than 12.15 million units have been sold in over 190 countries, cementing its reputation for reliability and endurance.
Over the decades, Toyota split the lineup into three main models: the luxury-leaning 300 Series, the heavy-duty 70 Series, and the back-to-basics 250 Series introduced in 2024. The new FJ adds a fourth member — smaller, simpler, and designed to appeal to those who want a Land Cruiser without the size or price of the larger versions.
Toyota says the “FJ” name represents Freedom & Joy, embodying a return to the Land Cruiser’s adventurous roots. The production version will make its first public debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, happening at Tokyo Big Sight from October 30 to November 9.

Visually, the FJ follows the same upright, squared-off silhouette that has defined the Land Cruiser for generations. The cabin is boxy to maximise space, while the chamfered body panels give it a more playful yet sturdy appearance.
Both the front and rear bumpers are modular — individual sections can be replaced if damaged, and the setup allows for personalisation with aftermarket parts. It’s a clear nod to owners who actually plan to get their vehicles dirty.
Inside, the dashboard takes on a horizontal layout for better outward visibility, and key controls are grouped together to reduce distractions. The low cowl and beltline make it easier to see over obstacles, while Toyota’s Safety Sense package — including a Pre-Collision System — provides modern safety backup.
Underneath, the FJ uses Toyota’s IMV platform, the same base as the Hilux and Fortuner. The wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250, giving it a tight 5.5-metre turning radius — handy both off-road and in city traffic.
Toyota says it maintains wheel articulation on par with the Land Cruiser 70, ensuring proper off-road performance. Structural bracing under the floor adds rigidity and improves handling stability, while the compact proportions make it easier to manoeuvre through narrow jungle trails or tight urban streets.

Power comes from a 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol engine, producing 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic and a part-time 4WD system.
As for size, the prototype measures 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,960 mm tall, with a 2,580 mm wheelbase. Seating is configured for five occupants.

Toyota is also making the FJ a lifestyle tool. Buyers will be able to choose round retro-style headlights, MOLLE panels for mounting outdoor gear, and various functional accessories. The brand plans to roll out more options throughout the model’s lifecycle, though availability will differ by region.
Toyota even showed the FJ alongside a new personal mobility device called the Land Hopper — a foldable electric scooter that fits in the boot and can be used to explore trails beyond where the SUV can go.
Photo from ToyotaWhile Toyota hasn’t confirmed export plans, the Land Cruiser FJ looks perfectly positioned for markets like Southeast Asia, where smaller body-on-frame SUVs remain popular. If priced right, it could sit below the Fortuner or 250 Series as an entry-level Land Cruiser — one that blends ruggedness with everyday usability.
It’s not just a nostalgic revival. The new FJ is Toyota’s attempt to make the Land Cruiser name more accessible — a compact 4x4 for a new generation of adventurers. Time for us to celebrate in Malaysia? We shall see, but know this, we're praying so hard that the new FJ will be officially sold here, because we'd book one in a heart beat.
Could It come to Malaysia?
While Toyota hasn’t confirmed export plans, the FJ’s platform and size make it highly relevant for Southeast Asian markets, especially Malaysia. Built on the same IMV base as the Hilux and Fortuner, local assembly (CKD) wouldn’t be far-fetched if demand is strong.
If introduced here, the Land Cruiser FJ could serve as a spiritual successor to the FJ Cruiser, sitting below the Prado (250 Series) and potentially rivaling models like the Suzuki Jimny, GWM Tank 300, or the upcoming Jetour T2. It would also appeal to off-road enthusiasts who want something more compact yet properly capable — without stepping up to a full-size Land Cruiser.
The FJ could very well become the next “do-it-all” adventure vehicle for the region — simple, mechanical, and built with Toyota’s trademark dependability.
