Volkswagen Golf - Features explained

Volkswagen Golf - Features explained

Volkswagen Golf was the best-selling model for the German automaker for many years. Though the top spot has been overtaken by Tiguan SUV recently, it does not mean the hatchback lost its charm. As a benchmark among compact hatchbacks, the VW Golf still has the unmistakable engineering and understated yet functional styling, along with high-quality cabin materials. At the same time, it is practical and reasonably priced.

In Malaysia, the ongoing iteration of Volkswagen Golf was made available in 2018 with a major reshuffling in the range. It is available in three trims - Golf R-Line, Golf GTI and Golf R, including differently tuned powerplants. Golf R sits at the top of the pyramid, offers the most performance out of the bunch, of course, the most expensive of the lot. Have a look at the Volkswagen Golf price list before heading towards the features of the hatchback.

Coming to the features of the Volkswagen Golf -

Striking design

The different Golfs flaunt different styling tweaks. Starting with base R-Line, the hatchback features R-Line front and rear bumper with R-Line specific design, rear spoiler, R-Line badges on the radiator grille and side panels, and 17-inch 'Singapore' alloy wheels.

The GTI avatar got typical GTI features for progressive design, including the red trim, the honeycomb structure in the ventilation grille, red brake calipers, and dynamic light-alloy rims. While the top-spec Golf R exhibits a compelling character and sporty demeanour with an 'R' exterior styling package (front, side, rear body kit, and spoiler) and 19-inch Pretoria Black wheels to complete the R package.

LED headlights and taillights

All the trims are equipped with a full LED headlights system along with LED daytime running lights. The system also houses dynamic headlight range control and dynamic cornering light for a safer and more relaxed drive. At the rear end, the hatchback houses a striking pair of LED taillights for an extra dose of style.

Dynamic light assist

Volkswagen Golf GTI also has a Dynamic Light Assist that optimises illumination of the carriageway. Its variable road illumination allows the main beam to be left on continuously without dazzling on the oncoming traffic.

Digital cockpit

The complete Golf range houses the same Digital Cockpit that offers progress at driver's fingertips with several information themes on a 12.3-inch screen.

Infotainment system

The lower trims carry an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with app connectivity options of Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and MirrorLink. However, Golf R gets a bigger 9.2-inch display with the same connectivity options but offers complete control from every seat. By downloading a free Media Control App, one can turn his/her smartphone into a remote control for the Golf Infotainment system. An 8-speaker audio system is standard.

Ergonomic interior

The classy interior of Volkswagen Golf has been developed with the new aesthetics, clarity, and high value to match. The seats are wrapped in Vienna perforated covers; also, the higher trims get an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory function.

Air Care 'Climatronic'

One another significant feature of the hatchback is Air Care 'Climatronic' system that keeps pollen, fungal spores, and particulates out from entering the car. It uses an air quality sensor with an active biogenic filter, which prevents the car even from minute allergens.

'Climatronic' air conditioning

It divides the cabin into two climate zones, which allows the driver and front passenger to select their desired climate independently from one another.

Kessy

With the keyless locking and starting system, entering the Volkswagen Golf and starting its engine got easier. All these can be done by just having the car's key in the pocket.

Engine

As we mentioned above, Volkswagen Golf specs sheet consists of different engine options. The base R-Line is powered by a 1.4-litre unit producing 150 PS of maximum power at 5000 - 6000 rpm and 250 Nm of peak torque at 1,500-3,500rpm.

The Golf GTI comes fitted with a bigger 2.0TSI turbocharged engine kicking out 230 PS at 4,700 rpm and delivers an impressive maximum torque of 350 Nm from only 1,500 rpm. However, the same engine is tuned for higher output for the top-spec guise. Under the bonnet of Golf R, it generates 290 PS at 5,400 rpm and 380 Nm torque at 1,850 rpm. The Golf R does 0 to 100 in just 5.1 seconds.

The same 7-Speed DSG gearbox does the transmission duties for all the variants.

Driving mode selection and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system

Volkswagen Golf Drive mode selection

The drive profile selection allows the driver to match the car's drive with his/her driving style according to the current road and traffic conditions. You can drive the Golf economically, or in a sporty manner or in a comfy way.

The Golf R also comes equipped with a four-wheel-drive system linked with other active safety systems to monitor driving conditions constantly.

Safety

Volkswagen indeed packed the Golf well with a plethora of safety features. It includes:-

  • Seven airbags: It comprises dual front, dual front side, and curtain airbags for front and rear passengers as well as a knee airbag for extra protection.
  • Proactive Occupant Protection System: It detects the emergency manoeuvre and prepares it in advance of a possible collision.
  • Rest Assist: It gives early warning to the driver at the time of brake requirement on long and tiring journeys to make driving safer.
  • Automatic Post Collision Brake System: It applies brakes to prevent a subsequent impact when a vehicle has been involved in a collision.
  • XDS: The technology lets the vehicle grip the road when cornering fast.
  • Electronic Stability Control: It detects critical situations at an early stage and stops skidding.
  • Manoeuvre braking: It helps in automatic braking of the car when it senses objects up to 10kmph to minimizes the minor scuffs during parking.

Concluding words

Volkswagen Golf has performance, sophistication, interior ambiance, and comfort, which cannot be overlooked when you are wondering about buying a new hatchback. Indeed, some rivals look more appealing, which go faster, and cost less, but the iconic Golf is one which is the classiest and savviest.
