KUALA LUMPUR: The growing popularity of SUVs is undeniable all around the world and today, we will be discussing an Indian off-road SUV that has been one of the best-selling models in the home market for two decades. We are talking about the Mahindra Scorpio, whose next-gen version (now called the Scorpio N) has just launched in India. The latest SUV is bigger, premium, and more powerful than ever and is touted to offer a greater value for money to the buyers.

    Said to be an affordable alternative to the Toyota Fortuner, the new Mahindra Scorpio-N comes with petrol and diesel engine choices. These include:

    • 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine delivering a maximum power of 203 PS and a peak torque of 370 Nm. This rear-wheel-drive mill is paired with a 6-speed MT or 6-speed AT gearbox.
    • 2.2-litre diesel engine that is good for making 132 PS and 300 Nm. It comes mated to a 6-speed MT gearbox and rear-wheel-drive system.
    • 2.2-litre diesel engine with a higher state of tune generating 175 PS and 370 Nm. Both manual and automatic transmission are available with this mill along with a shift-on-fly 4WD drive system.

    The SUV also features a ‘4XPLOR’ terrain mode (first-in-class) for cruising on different terrains, including desert, tarmac, snow, and mud. Included in the three drive modes are Zip, Zap, and Zoom.

    Design-wise, the new Scorpio received an evolutionary upgrade as it continues to feature the typical design traits associated with its predecessor. However, the smooth curves, new LED lighting with dynamic turn indicators, diamond-cut alloy wheels and other modern bits lend the SUV a whole new look. It is 206 mm longer and 97 mm wider than the outgoing model.

    Inside, it benefits from a significant upgrade in the form of a completely new black and brown cabin kitted with premium and modern inclusions like leatherette upholstery, 8.0-inch infotainment system with more than 70 connected car tech features, auto start-stop, cruise control, remote engine start, sunroof, and dual-zone climate control.

    As for safety, the new Mahindra Scorpio N is equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control, disc brakes, a rear camera, driver drowsiness detection, and more.
