30 kmph and 50 kmph speed limit to be a reality in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) is currently working with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBK) in order to make the 30 kmph and 50 kmph speed limit a reality, within certain parts of the capital. The said proposal first came to light in May 2021 and now things are moving in the implementation direction.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is there anything else apart from speed-limit restriction that MIROS and DBK are working on?

the MIROS and DBK are in talks to share CCTV footage and data to enhance their study of traffic offenses within the city centre.
  • The confirmation came from Suret Singh, MIROS Chairman, who on his Twitter handle posted the following statement, “DBKL and MIROS will work together to make speed limit [sic> 30 kmph for selected zones and 50kmph for [others> a reality.”

Locations? Well, specific areas where the new speed limits will be implemented are not finalised yet, however, in his response to concerned citizens, Suret Singh said the limit will be tested first in “one or two locations and perfect it first before proceeding further”.

In addition to that, the MIROS and DBK are in talks to share CCTV footage and data to enhance their study of traffic offenses within the city centre.

Wondering where the whole low-speed limit thing came from?

Well, the proposal for a low-speed limit came from the Stockholm Declaration 2020 of which Malaysia was also a part. During the global conference, 80 ministers pledged to reduce road fatalities by 2030. Part of the Declaration is a mandate for law enforcement to reduce the speed limit to 30 kmph in areas where vulnerable road users and vehicle frequency co-exists.

So, guys when and where these low-speed limits imply, do obey, as it is for everyone’s safety.
