Ford plans to use Mustang-badging for other models beyond Mach-E

KUALA LUMPUR: After launching the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the American multinational automobile manufacturer has taken the cover off from its intentions to introduce more models with the legendary Mustang-badging in the near future.

According to the reports, the carmaker is planning to convert the legendary badging into a performance sub-brand efficiently. This intention is similar to that of Seat with its Cupra sub-brand. Also, the brand has not revealed the fact that the upcoming Mustang-badged cars will have a combustion powertrain or an electric unit, similar to that of the Mach-E.

As you may recall, the electric Mach-E SUV is the carmaker’s first bespoke electric vehicle, and it comes with both the pony badge and Mustang name. Formerly, the development team started to work on a separate EV design; however, they had to change their plans when Ford chose to stick the Mustang badge on the project car.

Murat Gueler, Ford’s European design chief, told the publication that the brand’s plans could be applied to more upcoming Mustang models. He also added “The Mach-E is our step into the future, without ignoring history. There’s a lot of emotion with the Mustang, and it’s time to progress that and make it spread wider. Mustang is a big nameplate, and it’s about time we applied electrification to it. People now understand we can do different things to different nameplates quite successfully.”

He also stated that the most popular sports cars present on the planet are the Porsche 911 and the Ford Mustang. Gueler has revealed the fact that the upcoming EVs will not be as basic as Mustang-inspired EV. He explains “We don’t want to take a Russian doll approach, where you can’t tell them apart from other than the size of the car, but we want a family feel where a Ford EV starts to build off this concept. But we’d never do a smaller version of this – if we did a smaller vehicle it would have different proportions.”
