Highly awaited Tesla Model Y - What we know so far?
KUALA LUMPUR: Everybody is waiting for Tesla’s second SUV - the Tesla Model Y which is expected to launch in 2020. Model Y is likely to be more popular than the existing Model 3. Owing to the production problems Tesla has been facing, Musk clearly said that they will be producing a million units every year as the company is easing the manufacturing process. The Model Y is surely a step up in Tesla’s ‘Master Plan’ that ensures expansion beyond its current lineup.
The teaser pictures circulating on the internet do show that the car is bulkier but does it feature the famous Falcon Wing Doors? The launch year is hinted by Elon himself in an investor meeting in which he said they are just 24 months away from launch. Tesla also promised an all leather interior that would be made up for the synthetic materials instead of real leather. Earlier Tesla was in plans to develop the Model Y under a new electric platform but now we are certain it will be using an improved version of Model 3.
The car will also feature ‘Flex Circuit’ technology which reduces the number of wires needed drastically, it also lets you mould the circuit in whatever shape you desire. Tesla has been improving on this technology for quite some time now, it is one way the automaker differentiates itself from other companies. Tesla has also announced that the Model Y will use 95% less wiring with a reduced length of just 100 meters rather than the previous usage of 1.5 km.
The Model Y will be going up against strong competitors like Jaguar I-Pace, BMW iX3, and Mercedes-Benz EQC. Tesla has not confirmed the battery pack sizes but has promised to deliver an all-wheel-drive and a performance variant for the Model Y.
