That changes the story quite a bit from the earlier preview in Cyberjaya, because the missing piece is no longer just the launch date.

Malaysians now have a rough idea of where the Model Y L will sit in the market, and it is shaping up to be Tesla’s more family-focused offering for buyers who want a third row without stepping outside the brand.

The Model Y L is, as its name suggests, a longer-wheelbase version of the regular Model Y. It measures 4,976 mm long, 2,129 mm wide and 1,668 mm tall, with a 3,040 mm wheelbase. Compared to the standard Model Y, that means it is 179 mm longer, 44 mm taller, and rides on a wheelbase that is 150 mm longer, giving Tesla more room to package in three rows of seating.

That extra length is not just for show. The Model Y L gets a 2-2-2 six-seat layout, making it the first Tesla in Malaysia aimed more directly at larger families or buyers who simply want better second-row and third-row access than the regular five-seat Model Y can offer.

Tesla says the luggage space can expand to 2,539 litres, which is 409 litres more than the regular version, while the boot is said to be able to accommodate two 24-inch suitcases and one 20-inch suitcase.

Visually, the stretched model also brings a few changes beyond its bigger footprint. There is a reworked roofline and a revised rear spoiler, both of which help distinguish it from the regular Model Y while also contributing to aerodynamic efficiency and stability at higher speeds.

Inside, the Model Y L largely follows Tesla’s familiar minimalist approach, but with a few touches to suit its role as the more premium, family-oriented version. Key features include a 16-inch central touchscreen, an 8-inch rear display, wireless charging pads, a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, and a hands-free powered tailgate.

    Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup. Tesla quotes 462 PS, a 0-100 km/h time of 5.0 seconds, and a top speed of 201 km/h.

The battery capacity has still not been officially disclosed, which is typical Tesla behaviour, but the company is quoting a WLTP range of 681 km, placing it among the longest-range Model Y variants available. Charging figures are also familiar, with up to 250 kW DC fast charging and 11 kW AC charging.

The Model Y L also gets an adaptive damping suspension system, which should help it better deal with the added size and weight while offering a more polished ride, especially for passengers in the second and third rows.

With an estimated starting price of RM260,000, the Model Y L is set to sit above the current Malaysian Model Y range, including the existing Long Range AWD.

That was always expected, given the longer body, added seats, and more specialised positioning. The bigger question now is whether Malaysian buyers will see enough value in the extra practicality to justify the jump over the regular Model Y.

For now, at least, Tesla has made its intentions clear. The Model Y L is no longer just an interesting preview item, it is officially on display in Malaysia, it now has an estimated local starting price, and deliveries are already pencilled in for Q2 2026.
