6-seater Tesla Model Y L launched in China with longer wheelbase

KUALA LUMPUR: After releasing a teaser last month, Tesla has now officially launched the six-seater version of the Model Y in the Chinese market. Named as Tesla Model Y L, the latest EV is based on the Model Y Juniper and comes with an extended wheelbase.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much does the Tesla Model Y L cost?

The Tesla Model Y L is priced at CNY 339,000 in the Chinese market.
  • Will Malaysia get the Tesla Model Y L?

As of now, it remains unclear whether the 6-seater Model Y L will be offered outside China.
  • Larger dimensions

The Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. Compared to the 5-seater version, it is 179 mm longer, 44 mm taller, and has a 150 mm longer wheelbase. The kerb weight is 96 kg more at 2,088 kilograms.

The boot offers a maximum expandable volume of 2539 litres (409 litres more than the regular EV), accommodating two 24-inch and one 20-inch suitcase.

    Enhanced aerodynamic profile

Along with its larger dimensions, the Model Y L further sets itself apart with a redesigned roofline and a re-engineered rear spoiler. These aerodynamic enhancements offer the EV a sportier look, better efficiency and enhanced high-speed stability. Figuratively, the six-seater Model Y has a drag coefficient of 0.216.

    Cabin upgrades

Inside the new Tesla EV, we can find a three-row seating layout with two individual captain chairs in the second row and a bench-type seat in the third row. The captain chairs come with ventilation and heating functions, power-retractable armrests, along with power recline and folding functions.

Another noticeable modification is a more prominent support beam on the roof, positioned above the third row, which slightly alters the look but still offers plenty of headroom, says Tesla.

    • New 16-inch central touchscreen infotainment system (15.4-inch available on the regular version)
    • Upgraded front wireless charging pad with fast charging at up to 50W and 30W
    • Redesigned audio system with a new centre console speaker and two additional top speakers
    • Charging ports are available for both second and third passengers
    • Three-row airbags with total airbag protection area spanning 3.9 metres, covering over 95% of the EV’s longitudinal space

    Dual-motor all-wheel drive setup

The six-seater Model Y is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, with the front motor generating a maximum of 190 hp and the rear motor producing 266 hp. Together, they enable the EV to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 kmph. Also part of the setup is an 82 kWh ternary lithium battery, offering a CLTC range of 751 km.

The six-seater Tesla Model Y L price in China starts from CNY 339,000 (RM 199k), with deliveries expected to commence in September.
