Here’s the first glimpse of Tesla’s new six-seater EV, the Model Y L

KUALA LUMPUR: Tesla China has begun the teaser campaign for the upcoming Model Y L ("L" stands for Long), a new six-seater version of the Model Y featuring an extended wheelbase. The company shared a dark teaser image on its official Weibo account, highlighting the EV’s side profile and a new badge with the ‘YYY’ script.

While Tesla remains tight-lipped about the EV’s details, the MIIT (Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) filings have unveiled photos and some preliminary specifications of the upcoming Tesla EV. 

Tesla Model Y L: What do we know so far

According to the report, the Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. Compared to the 5-seater version, it is 179 mm longer, 44 mm taller, and has a 150 mm longer wheelbase. The kerb weight will also be 96 kg more, at 2,088 kilograms.

Notably, the EV giant previously offered a third-row iteration of the Model Y with a bench-type seat in the second row. However, that option was removed with the arrival of the Model Y Juniper. The upcoming three-row Model Y L is said to be a six-seater SUV, which means we can expect captain seats in the second row. 

Under the skin, the EV will feature an LG-sourced ternary NMC battery pack. It will be mated to an all-wheel drive dual-motor setup, delivering a combined system output of 462 PS (12 PS more than the 5-seater AWD Long-range) and a top speed of 201 kmph. 

Set to hit the Chinese market soon, the Tesla Model Y L is expected to be priced around CNY 300,000 (approx RM 177,438).

Tesla Model Y in Malaysia

Closer to home, Tesla launched the all-new Model Y Juniper in February this year. It is offered in two versions - Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range All-Wheel Drive, offering a driving range of 466 km and 551 km, respectively. The Tesla Model Y price in Malaysia begins at RM 195,450 and goes up to RM 242,450.
