Honda Malaysia recalls 12,329 units of City and Jazz over CVT control software issue

Kuala Lumpur: A recall has just been issued by Honda Malaysia concerning an improper hydraulic pressure control software in the continuously variable transmission (CVT gearbox). Two models are affected with this fault – 12,232 units of the fourth generation Honda City (2014 model year) and 97 units of the third generation Honda Jazz (2015 model year).

This product update, as Honda calls it, will rectify the Powertrain Control Module through a CVT software update containing the solution – a stress reduction software. The exercise seeks to rectify the powertrain control module (PCM) in affected vehicles through a CVT software update. Otherwise, running at high speeds and changing gear pattern quickly can produce high hydraulic pressure, as a result high stress will be produced to the drive pulley shaft. This increased stress may break the shaft, resulting in the car experiencing a loss of power during driving.

Honda Malaysia explained, “Due to the stepping in and releasing of the accelerator pedal at high speed, high hydraulic pressure will cause great stress to be generated to the drive pulley shaft and may cause the shaft to break, thus experiencing a loss of power during driving.” There have been no injuries or crashes related to this issue as of today, and Honda Malaysia regrets the inconvenience caused to its customers.

Customers who are affected with the issue will be contacted via notification letters. Recipients are advised to send their vehicles to the nearest authorised Honda dealer for inspection. If rectification is needed, all cost incurred will be borne by Honda Malaysia. No other models besides the City and Jazz are affected in this campaign.
