Hyundai Mobis coming up with the first ever sunroof airbag system

KUALA LUMPUR: As the auto world is gearing up for its next evolution, each manufacturer is playing its part to innovate something unique for the industry. One such unique innovation is the world’s first airbag system developed by Korean component maker, Hyundai Mobis. It is a part of Hyundai Motor Group, which claims to develop the first airbag system for sunroofs.

The manufacturer had submitted its study to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in which the idea behind the sunroof airbag has been described. According to Hyundai Mobis, this new airbag system will improve the level of protection in a case of the roll over as most of the injuries occur in the head due to lack of any firm support.

The report also suggests that the sunroof market size was estimated to be $4,924 million in 2015 with average growth rate of 10.9 percent each year until 2022. The growth of this market is particularly high in the premium automotive segment with a special focus on China, India, and Korea. After a couple of tests and different prototypes, Hyundai Mobis has finalized one solution. It further added that the airbag will be integrated within the panoramic sunroof which will be deployed from the back to the front along the development wire type guider.

It will just take 0.08 sec to come into action, preventing the occupants from the serious neck as well as head injuries. As the safety regulations in various markets is due for an update, Hyundai Mobis aims to grab orders for panoramic sunroofs in SUVs from a market worth $5.3 billion across the globe. It is expected that sunroof airbag system will be first seen in the premium SUVs, followed by the other segments with due time.
