Jaguar to become an all-electric car brand in next five years

KUALA LUMPUR: As policymakers around the world seek to push people towards greener transportation modes by banning petrol vehicles, automakers are rapidly ramping up their EV plans. One of the latest to join the electric transition is the British luxury automaker Jaguar. Yesterday, the new Jaguar Land Rover boss Thierry Bolloré has announced that Jaguar will become a pure electric luxury car brand by 2025.

By the middle of the decade, Jaguar will have undergone a renaissance to get a “dramatically beautiful new portfolio of emotionally engaging designs and pioneering next-generation technologies” as a part of the company’s Reimagine strategy.

In the electric transition, the company will also give up the plan of bringing a new Jaguar XJ full-size sedan, although it may retain the nameplate for a future model. Bolloré also confirmed that the Jaguar will use an exclusive EV architecture by leaving the internal combustion MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform.

The JLR’s Reimagine strategy sets a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its products, supply chain, as well as operations by 2039. For which, the company also planned for the expected adoption of clean fuel-cell power in line, whose prototype is already under development and will hit the UK roads within the next 12 months.

As part of the strategy, JLR’s Land Rover brand will also launch six pure electric models in the next five years, with the first one arriving in 2024.

JLR owned by India’s Tata Motors said that it has planned to spend approx 2.5 billion pounds every year on electrification technologies and the evolution of connected vehicle services.

“The Reimagine strategy takes Jaguar Land Rover on a significant path of acceleration in harmony with the vision and sustainability priorities of the wider Tata Group. Together, we will help Jaguar realize its potential, reinforce Land Rover’s timeless appeal and collectively become a symbol of a truly responsible business for its customers, society, and the planet,” said Mr. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, Tata Motors, and Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc.
