Range Rover Electric makes global debut with 598 km range and 800V charging

KUALA LUMPUR: Jaguar Land Rover has finally pulled the wraps off its first-ever pure electric model, the Range Rover Electric. It is built on the same Flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA-Flex) as the SUV’s ICE and PHEV versions. Let’s dive into the details.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the range of the Range Rover EV?

Equipped with a 118.5kWh battery pack, the Range Rover EV offers a WLTP-claimed driving range of 598 km.
  • How much does the Range Rover Electric cost?

The Range Rover Electric price begins at GBP 154,070 (approximately equal to RM 840k) in the UK.
  • What are the rivals of the Range Rover Electric?

The Range Rover Electric rivals the likes of fully electric luxury SUVs such as the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and Volvo EX90.

    7 Grade levels on offer

The Range Rover EV will be offered in 7 grade levels - SE, HSE, Autobiography, SV, SV Ultra, SV Black and First Edition, with a choice of short or long wheelbase.

    Familiar design with EV-specific updates

Visually, the EV version looks almost similar to the ICE-powered Range Rover introduced almost five years ago. However, the eco-friendly model gets an aero-optimised front grille and wheels for better performance.

The cabin also looks identical, with a minimalistic dashboard layout housing a 4-spoke steering wheel, a central touchscreen, and a digital instrument cluster with EV-specific graphics. However, the automaker has also made a few modifications to the vehicle’s floor to accommodate the battery packs.

Dual electric motors and a 118.5kWh battery pack

Based on an 800V electric architecture, the Range Rover EV comes equipped with two electric motors (one on each axle), kicking out a maximum power of 550 PS and a peak torque of 850 Nm. The grunt is enough to propel the electric SUV from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.5 seconds. Notably, the electric Range Rover produces more torque than any Range Rover to date and offers a quieter driving experience.

Feeding the motors is a massive 118.5kWh battery pack that offers a WLTP-claimed driving range of 598 km. The battery supports up to a 350 kW DC fast charger, with which 10 to 80 per cent charge can be achieved in just 22 minutes.

    Range Rover capability retained

While the automaker swapped the ICE mill with an electric powertrain, the SUV’s traditional off-road capabilities have not been compromised. Like the ICE version, it features a water-wading capability of 900 mm and has an air suspension as well for improved stability, comfort and off-road performance.

The EV also comes with a single-pedal driving system that offers greater control on steep and challenging terrain and an intelligent Driveline Dynamics system, which distributes torque depending on the terrain and helps prevent loss of traction. The advanced traction management system responds within 50 milliseconds.

“Range Rover Electric is the result of a decade of considered engineering and technological development, setting a new benchmark for The Original Luxury SUV. Electric propulsion is perfectly suited to the exquisite refinement of Range Rover, elevating the sense of calm and secluded sanctuary for occupants. At the same time, Range Rover's breadth of capability is uncompromised thanks to the combination of a powerful, adaptable electric powertrain and advanced chassis technologies that make every Range Rover peerless, accomplished and desired,” said Martin Limpert, Managing Director, Range Rover.
