Range Rover GT revealed: electric grand tourer joins the family

KUALA LUMPUR: Land Rover has confirmed a fifth model, and for once it isn't another upright SUV. This is the Range Rover GT, a lower, sleeker grand tourer that reads more coupe than off-roader.

It's also the first fully electric Range Rover built on the brand's new EMA platform, so it's a proper new direction rather than a reworked version of something we already know.

For the first time, Range Rover is letting us see inside. The cabin runs on the same pared-back thinking as the bodywork: clean, uncluttered, not much fuss.

In place of the usual instrument cluster there's a single screen paired with a separate driver display. A hidden air vent stretches the full width of the dash to give that flat horizontal line Range Rover keeps coming back to.

The dashboard is wrapped in a woven fabric that runs across the cabin in one piece, with the speakers tucked out of sight behind it. The aim is a quieter space with less visual clutter, and more functions you can reach or ask for without digging through menus.

Built in the UK, electric first

The GT will be made in Halewood in the UK, on the same line as the petrol and hybrid Range Rovers. It launches as a battery electric vehicle (BEV), with a full hybrid (HEV) option planned later in its life rather than from day one.

Range Rover's pitch is that the GT can do the grand tourer job, long-distance comfort, the right stance and proportions, that easy pace, while still pulling off things a normal GT can't. Here's how the brand puts it:

We have spent the last few years working obsessively on the fundamentals of the GT formula, reinterpreted in a sophisticated, uniquely Range Rover way. The result is the most car‑like, yet unmistakably capable, Range Rover ever created, now possible on our electrified EMA architecture – complementing our existing powertrain portfolio to deliver a complete set of options for every customer need. Its blend of effortless EV performance, first‑class long‑haul refinement and all‑terrain capability is pure Range Rover; while its calming interior previews our vision of a modern grand tourer."

Still in camo, more to come

Prototypes are out doing their final road testing now, wrapped in a camo design the in-house team put together themselves.

The pattern is based on the contour lines of the landscape around Gaydon, where Range Rover's design and engineering teams are based, turned into a flowing gold graphic meant to nod at the car's grand touring, journey-first character.

The digital look is a reference to the tech inside, which Range Rover reckons makes this its most technologically advanced model yet.

Range Rover says the full reveal and the real details, power, battery size, range, land later this year (2026).

Of course, Land Rover Malaysia hasn't said anything about local plans, pricing or timing for the GT yet, and global deliveries aren't expected until 2027, so Malaysian buyers shouldn't hold their breath.
