KLIMS 2026: All-new third-gen Mazda CX-5 makes its Malaysian debut

KUALA LUMPUR: The wait is over. What has changed

The third-generation CX-5, codenamed KM, made its global debut in July 2025 and represents the most significant update to the model since its original launch in 2012. It is larger than its predecessor in every meaningful dimension, growing 140 mm in length to 4,690 mm and 20 mm in width to 1,860 mm, with the wheelbase stretching by 115 mm to 2,815 mm. The extra size translates directly into improved rear passenger space and a meaningfully bigger boot, two areas where the outgoing model faced criticism.

The design retains clear Kodo "Soul of Motion" lineage but pushes it forward with a more refined stance. The rear of the car is now where it differs most visibly from its predecessor, with the Mazda name spelled out in full across the tailgate. Inside, a large touchscreen takes centre stage, which is likely to support Google Built-in functionality.

    Powertrain

For Malaysia, the third-generation CX-5 is expected to come with a single powertrain option, the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid petrol engine producing 141 PS and 238 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. A 2WD setup only at launch, with an AWD variant also possible down the line.

Notably, the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine that was available on the outgoing model is not likely to carry over to the third generation. A hybrid powertrain has been confirmed by Mazda globally, but is expected no earlier than 2027. For now, the mild-hybrid augmentation of the e-Skyactiv G system does the efficiency work, with fuel consumption figures of around 7.0 litres per 100 km on the WLTP cycle.

    Pricing and availability

The all- new Mazda CX-5 is now open for booking at all authorised Mazda showrooms nationwide, ahead of its arrival in Malaysia.

The third-generation CX-5 will arrive first as a fully imported CBU model, with estimated pricing expected to come in below RM170,000. A locally assembled CKD version is expected to follow in 2027, which should bring the price down further when it arrives.

At below RM170,000 for the CBU, the new CX-5 positions itself competitively against the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Jaecoo J7 in one of Malaysia's most fought-over segments.

The third-generation CX-5 has a lot riding on it. It is Mazda's most important model in Malaysia by a considerable margin, and first impressions suggest Bermaz has addressed the two biggest criticisms of the outgoing car, rear space and cargo room, without sacrificing what made it worth buying in the first place. The mild-hybrid powertrain is a sensible step forward, the interior tech is a significant generational leap, and the pricing looks realistic.

If you are in the market for a C-segment SUV in Malaysia, KLIMS 2026 is the place to get your first look at the new CX-5.
