KLIMS 2026: GWM Ora 5 hybrid crossover revealed, confirmed for Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: GWM Malaysia is using KLIMS 2026 to preview two upcoming electrified models, and the one generating the most interest is the Ora 5. A B-segment crossover that sits above the existing Ora Good Cat hatchback in the lineup, the Ora 5 has been confirmed for Malaysia and will arrive in hybrid form first before an all-electric version follows. Pricing has yet to be announced for the local market.
What it is
The Ora 5 is built on GWM's new GWM One platform, a multi-pathway architecture designed to support pure electric, hybrid, and even fuel-cell powertrains from a single underpinning. This is what gives the Ora 5 the flexibility to be offered in full combustion, hybrid, and battery-electric variants depending on the market.
For Malaysia, the hybrid variant is coming first. It pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine producing 150 PS and 240 Nm with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 190 PS and 236 Nm, fed by a 1.03 kWh lithium-ion battery. Combined system output stands at 223 PS and 476 Nm, with a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. For a B-segment crossover, those are punchy numbers.
The Ora 5 carries over the same rounded, character-heavy design language from the Ora Good Cat, which means it will either win you over immediately or leave you cold. The family resemblance is strong, the key visual differences being the roof rails and a slightly more upright, crossover stance compared to the Good Cat's hatchback silhouette.
It is a meaningfully larger car than the Good Cat, though. At 4,471 mm long, 1,833 mm wide, and 1,641 mm tall with a 2,720 mm wheelbase and 175 mm of ground clearance, it slots in size between the BYD Atto 3 and the Proton eMAS 7, making it a genuine contender in one of Malaysia's most competitive segments.
Suspension is MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link setup at the rear, and it rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/60R18 rubber.
The interior is centred around a 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver. Standard equipment includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, voice command, remote app functions, and a six-speaker audio system. The driver's seat gets six-way power adjustment as standard, while the front passenger seat is manually adjustable on the base trim, with power adjustment added on the premium variant.
How it might be priced
Malaysian pricing has not been confirmed, but there is a useful regional reference point. In Thailand, where the Ora 5 HEV has already launched, pricing starts from 729,000 baht, which works out to approximately RM89,000. Malaysia's pricing will inevitably be higher once local taxes and duties are factored in, but the Thai figure suggests GWM will be targeting an aggressive price point for the Malaysian market, likely somewhere in the RM110,000 to RM130,000 range based on how GWM has historically priced models here relative to Thailand.
At that kind of money, the Ora 5 HEV would take direct aim at the Proton X50, Honda HR-V, and Toyota Yaris Cross in a segment that is seeing enormous growth right now.
The Ora 5 is a smart move from GWM Malaysia. The Ora Good Cat carved out a loyal niche as an affordable and characterful EV, but a hybrid crossover opens the door to a significantly larger pool of Malaysian buyers who are not yet ready to go fully electric. The 223 PS combined output is genuinely competitive, the platform is modern and flexible, and the pricing trajectory from Thailand suggests GWM will come in aggressively.
Full specifications and pricing for Malaysia are expected to be confirmed closer to the official launch.
