Lexus GX 460 concept revealed

KUALA LUMPUR: It seems like Lexus is all set to tap the off-roading segment with its beefed-up and robust new concept, the GX 460. Aimed to explore great outdoors, the new concept from Lexus is dubbed as the GX Overland, which is an off-roader with camping necessities. Based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the GX Overland comes with a pair of rock sliders by the door sills and skidplates for under-chassis protection.

The ride height of the SUV has been increased by some margin. It sits on the all-terrain tyres that are wrapped around special alloy wheels. At the front, it gains the steel bumper bar instead of a full steel bumper due to the signature spindle grille. At the back, the tailgate gets a spare tyre mount.

On the roof, there is a big box that comes with a tent with a bed, a shower cube and a large awning. The tent setup equipped on the roof of the car is quick to deploy and is good for accommodating two. The awning can be deployed on the driver’s side and also at the back for a bit of shade in case the sun beats at its peak.

GX Overland side profile

While commenting on a body-on-frame build, the automaker said in a statement, “This gives GX unparalleled strength while still providing the driver and guests with the unparalleled Lexus luxury experience.”

Inside, the concept gets seat-mounted screens for entertainment purposes. With a fairly good signal, you can catch up with your favourite show while on the move, good for fellow campers. Aside from this, there are features like crawl control for maintaining a consistent pace while off-roading and a special system, upon selection, can adjust its brakes, engine and transmission fluid cooler.

The GX Overland will continue to be powered by the 4.6-litre V8 engine that churns out a max power of 301 PS and a peak torque of 446 Nm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It will be a four-wheel-drive model.

The off-roader concept by Lexus was on display a few days back at the Montréal International Auto Show. The automaker hasn’t shared its plans about putting the concept into production. We’ll have to wait until an official word is out. Meanwhile, you can explore more automotive news on our portal and stay tuned with us for more updates on the Lexus GX 460 concept.
