KUALA LUMPUR: Forgetting a child inside a car is the last thing one wants to do. But still every now and then, we hear news of children getting injured, heatstroke, and even die due to the carelessness of the adults. To avoid such an incident, a handful of automakers have developed what’s called a rear-seat detection system.

Hyundai, however, with its latest radar-based rear passenger detection system, has taken the child safety game a level-up. For comparison, while Hyundai uses a radar-based system, the other system available use a weight or ultrasonic sensor to monitor child/rear occupants.

Hyundai radar-based detection system

According to Hyundai, a radar sensor improves detection accuracy. Further, they are the same radar sensor used in autonomous cars and can detect as well as distinguish pets, adults, and children in the rear seat. The company also said that the sensor could even “penetrate clothes and measure various biosignals, e.g., micromovements of passengers’ chests and blood flow”, thus detecting rear-seat occupants more accurately.

Hyundai Mobis developed the said system, and it can detect the passenger at the rear seat once the driver gets off the car. After an infant or passenger is detected, the system alerts the driver by making a sound. It does so by sending the driver an alert on the smartphone and through the instrument panel.

In the future, Hyundai Mobis plans to pitch its radar-based rear passenger detection system to other carmakers as well. We are not sure when this system will go into production, but until that happens, always remember to check on your children before getting out of the car.
