Proton records 23.9% sales growth in March; wraps up Q1 2025 at 35k

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has revealed the sales numbers for March 2025. During the third month of the year, the national automaker sold a total of 13,918 cars, representing an impressive month-on-month growth of 23.9%. Compared to the same month in 2024, it recorded a hike of 9.6%.

    With this surge in sales, Proton's estimated market share (including domestic, export, smart, Proton e.MAS) is 19.4%, based on a forecasted Total Industry Volume of 71,596 units. Proton’s Q1 2025 sales stand at 35,068 units.

    The factors that contributed to this sales momentum are strong domestic demand across all models, growth in export sales, and the outstanding performance of the Proton e.MAS 7, which is now the best-selling EV in Malaysia

    Model-wise sales performance 

    Proton Saga

    • Continues to be Proton’s best-selling model with 6,154 units sold in March (up 22.5% from February)
    • Crossed the 6,000-unit mark first time in 2025

    Proton X50

    • Continues to be Proton’s best-selling SUV with 1,858 units sold in March 
    • YTD total: 5,117 units

    Proton S70

    • Leading the C-segment sedan category with 2,125 units sold in March (up 77.5% from February)
    • YTD sales: 4,465 units

    Proton X70

    • Showing strong recovery in the C-segment SUV category with 835 units sold in March (up 29.3% from February)
    • YTD total: 2,158 units

    Proton e.MAS 7 

    • Leading Proton’s EV lineup with 797 units (domestic + export) sold in March 
    • YTD sales: 1,853 units

    Proton X90

    • Leading the D-segment SUV category with 302 units sold in March (up 73.6% from February)
    • YTD total: 679 units

    Proton Persona & Proton Iriz

    • Both recorded their best monthly sales in March
    • Persona: 1,482 units
    • Iriz: 337 units

    “PROTON’s month-on-month sales grew by 23.9% in March, outpacing TIV growth of 12%, while sales volume has also gone up by 9.6% over the same month in 2024. We attribute the results to our aggressive sales promotions that provide fantastic value to all Proton buyers, and the class-leading level of service delivered from an unmatched nationwide network of 3S/4S dealerships,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.

    “Looking ahead towards Q2 in 2025, we predict a continued number of new models being launched that will deliver a bevy of attractive deals, but PROTON remains confident our dealership network and commitment to Malaysian car buyers will deliver the best long-term ownership experience to our customers,” he added.

    Proton’s export & expansion updates

    Proton exported 417 vehicles in March 2025 with a month-on-month growth of 211%. The brand’s total export sales are now 11.4% ahead of Q1 2024, with the Proton Saga leading the charge. Proton e.MAS has also helped grow export volume with shipments sent to Nepal and Trinidad & Tobago.

    “Exports are a critical pillar for PROTON’s growth strategy. We are beginning to see positive results from our overseas investments, and though there is still a long way to go to hit our long-term targets, we are confident our current and future model offerings will appeal to overseas and domestic buyers,” added Roslan Abdullah.
