Suzuki Jimny/Gypsy new renderings by Mightyseed

KUALA LUMPUR: As a rebadged version of the Suzuki Jimny, the Maruti Gypsy has been one of the most popular off-roaders in the Indian market, which is no longer available commercially. While the market is in anticipation of its comeback, here comes a significant redesign created by Mightyseed, an automotive design company based in India.

In a way to explore the possibilities of how future Gypsy could look like, the design team has come up with a reinterpretation featuring a ‘neo-retro’ style. The renderings preview a modern-day Gypsy with cool and rugged looks.

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy front

At the front, it features a five-slot grille and circular headlights resembling the older version. At the same time, the bold and twisty shoulder line on the side over angular cladding along the lower door lends it a distinctive styling element. Other highlights are flared wheel arches, silver skid plate, flat hood, and dual-tone bumper. The headlights, taillights, as well as roof-mounted lights, all look appealing with LED signature. The Gypsy also gets a vertical handle at the back that indicates a side-opening boot lid, which holds the spare tyre also, just like the Jimny.

By closely analyzing the images, we can notice that it looks smoother than the original model, although it carries on a boxy and rugged appeal. The design company does not have any reinterpretation image of the Gypsy interior, and also there is no mention of the technical specifications.

Talking about the upcoming Jimny, Suzuki had showcased its 3-door model at the 2020 Auto Expo held in India. The new iteration is based on the ladder-on-frame structure with the 4WD system. Under the hood, it is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine capable of delivering 100 horsepower and 130 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options comprise a five-speed manual and a four-speed torque converter automatic.

The company has already initiated the assembling of 3-door Jimny at its Indian plant for the export markets. Moreover, a 5-door Suzuki Jimny is also in the pipeline, which is expected to arrive in 2022-23 for head-to-head competition with the recently launched Mahindra Thar.
