Volkswagen introduces new-gen diesel engine with mild hybrid technology
KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen has engineered a new-gen diesel engine featuring mild hybrid technology, which will come paired with four cylinders. The German auto company is making quality efforts to introduce innovations in its engine selection.

As per the company, this TDI engine, also called EA288 Evo, will be the world's first four-cylinder diesel engine coupled with a hybrid system. The EA288 Evo is supposed to start as a mild hybrid drive paired with 12V belt starter generator. It enjoys a displacement reading 2.0-liters and offers flexible producing power. The new-gen diesel engine will produce power ranging from 136 PS to 204 PS. No information is available concerning the torque the engine can offer. The mild-hybrid engines are quickly gaining popularity these days as they cause less pollution.
Volkswagen will also be introducing the next-generation Golf with a 48v hybrid engine. Golf is one of Europe's best-selling cars. The strategy of the German automaker to capture a sizeable market for its hybrid vehicles and attract a larger spectrum of masses is quite understandable with this.

The EA288 Evo engine comes appropriately backed with exhaust after-treatment components, like SCR components (NOx treatment using selective catalytic reduction) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) for ensuring less toxic emission from the vehicles. With all these eco-friendly features, the German automaker claims to achieve a reduction in the emission by 10g/km of CO2.
It is being speculated that the company will use the engine first on Audi cars. Possibilities are also there that the mild-hybrid powertrain will be installed in the MLB Evo platform vehicles as well. They have the likelihood to be used in the all-new A6 as well as the facelifted A4. The remaining of the Volkswagen Auto Group gamut will follow soon.
