Volvo previews its next generation Auto Pilot technology – “Intellisafe”

Kuala Lumpur: Volvo is currently the world leader when it comes to safety among cars and now this Swedish manufacturer is all set to become the market leader in technology domain as well. The company has come with one of a kind autonomous driving function called Intellisafe Auto Pilot. Volvo is planning to start a “Drive Me” 2017 autonomous driving project in Gothenburg and under this project the company will feature the “Intellisafe” autonomous driving on hundred XC90 SUVs.

The unique feature can be easily activated using the two blinking paddles placed behind the steering wheels, both of these paddles need to be pulled simultaneously until the bar completes and activates the mode. The two light strips on the paddles turn to a constant green when the system takes complete control over the car. It notifies the driver about the remaining time the car will be in autopilot.

Auto pilot is an all new technology hence a lot of work has to be done over it. It's in a starting phase, thus this technology will only work on selected routes where the traffic is not much intense. The car automatically recognizes the surrounding and notifies the availability of autopilot mode to the driver. Following which the green lights on the paddles starts flashing and the supervision cluster displays the message that the self-driving function is ready and can be engaged.

When the auto pilot function will be no longer available on the road than the car will notify the driver to take control over it, a 60-second countdown will begin in the instrument cluster.

If the driver will fail to complete the promised action within the time frame then the car will safely pull over to a stop on its own. Thomas Ingenlath, senior VP of Design at Volvo Cars said, “we have designed a user interface that is safe and seamless to use so that drivers can confidently transfer and regain control of the car.” It certainly sounds more interesting than a button.

The “Drive Me” project in Gothenburg is stretched over 50 km on selected roads.Volvo is inviting families and commuters around Gothenburg to experience it in an XC90. After its testing phase, the technology's will be provided for the masses worldwide.
