The HR-V is a decent choice as an everyday vehicle in my opinion. It is a sensible choice of transportation within the city as it offers ample space and comfort to its passengers. The driving position is very comfortable and offers a great view of the road ahead. The engine is quiet but is vastly underpowered for your highway needs. The acceleration is not very quick and you will need to make a good judgement before overtaking other vehicles ahead of you. This won't be much of a problem in the city and the decent fuel economy will also help you save some fuel.
