Self-Driving Cars: Getting Closer to Reality

Self-Driving Cars: Getting Closer to Reality

Self-driving car, also known as autonomous car, driverless car or robotic car is an automatic vehicle which is capable of fulfilling the main transportation capabilities of a traditional car. These cars have control systems which are capable of analyzing sensory data and hence distinguish between different objects on the road. Now as we are getting closer to experiencing this technology on roads, many questions are bound to arise. Would it be safe? Are they even legal? And what not. With Google initiating this technology, now Volvo and Tesla are also in the pipeline. Self-driving cars represent one of the most remarkable advancements in transportation technology since the first automobile. So for many it may be a dream come true but not for the critics who are leaning on the negative aspect. Although this debate is endless but atleast we can look out on some pros and cons. As every coin has two sides, this technology also comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Potential Advantages

  • It comes as a relief for drivers as they no more have to control all the driving and navigation chores.
  • Traffic collisions caused by human drivers could be avoided to some extent.
  • It would result in reduced traffic congestions with its ability to better manage traffic flows.
  • Would be a great help for physically handicapped, blind and elderly.
  • Cars can be driven on higher speeds with autonomous technology.
  • An increased cabin space could be achieved with the removal of steering and other driving controls.
  • It would greatly reduce the accidents and fatalities caused on the roads.
  • Cars will also become more fuel efficient as they will automatically track down the fastest route possible.

Potential Disadvantages

  • Software reliability is still a question.
  • Self-driving cars have to go through a lot of legal framework and government regulations.
  • Liability for damage continues to lie wit both the automaker and individual owner.
  • There would be a huge loss of driving related jobs.
  • Not suitable for harsh weather conditions.
  • Autonomous cars may require very high-quality specialised maps for navigation, but many countries still lack it.
  • Traffic police and pedestrian gestures are not adapted to autonomous driving.
  • Many countries still need an updated road infrastructure which would allow autonomous cars to function optimally.

With this technology coming to reality, a take it or leave it position would definitely arise.

Instead she would love to collect those toy cars and would go gaga over them. Dragged into the commerce background earlier, now she has finally found her long lost love with CarBay. With a dream to own an Aston Martin one day, she doesn't get tired researching about other automakers too.
