Isuzu continues its dominance in the pickup segment with the D-Max, which has been updated recently. This is the second facelift for the current-generation Isuzu D-Max that was first launched in Thailand four years ago. While the facelifted model has been rolled out, a third-generation version of the pickup truck is underway. 

The new model is expected to receive copious changes in the aesthetic and mechanical front. However, it will take some time before the third-gen D-Max launches here in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the facelifted model will bridge the gap until the new-gen model arrives. 

2019 Isuzu D-Max exterior-

The styling on the outside sees no major tweaks as it carries over most of the elements from the pre-facelift version. Subtle updates are made on the surface, and it receives two new color options. 

• At front, it gets a redesigned grille that meets with the bi-LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights
• The larger 18-inch alloy wheels features new 12-spoke layout are available only with the higher-spec variants. 
• The 1.9-litre variants sport ‘1.9 BluePower’ decals on the sides and at the back

The 2019 Isuzu D-Max color options include Silky White Pearl, Magnum White, Titan Silver, and Stallion Black. Aside from these shades, Isuzu has introduced Sapphire Blue Mica and Red Spinal Mica colors to the lineup.

The pickup retains most of the styling elements on the inside and witnesses no significant change in terms of design. Most of the tweaks are visible on the top-spec grades. It now gets some soft-touch materials on some parts of the cabin, such as armrests, upper glovebox covering, and the area above the instrument cluster.

2019 Isuzu D-Max specs-

The pickup receives a host of changes, albeit one of the most prominent revisions on the new D-Max is the addition of the latest-generation 1.9-litre four-cylinder RZ4E-TC turbodiesel engine. A replacement to the higher capacity 2.5-litre unit, the new four-cylinder motor belongs to Isuzu’s BluePower family of the diesel engine.

• In comparison to the previous unit, it is more powerful and sees a reduction in fuel consumption by 19 per cent
• The internal friction has also been decreased by 37 percent
•  It achieves 0 to 100 kmph mark in just 13.9 seconds (AT version). The manual version takes slightly less time at 13.7 seconds

While Isuzu has added a new unit, the 3.0-litre, four-pot unit with variable geometry turbo has been carried over from the pre-facelift version. There is no change in the power output, and it gets a 5-speed manual unit along with an automatic option. 

How much fuel economy does the new 1.9-litre diesel engine deliver?

As per claims, the 2019 Isuzu D-Max mileage for the new 1.9-litre diesel engine is rated at 12.5 kmpl.

The 2019 Isuzu D-Max range comprises of eleven variants, including nine Double Cab and two single cab versions. The majority of grades in the lineup (eight) are powered by the new 1.9-litre four-popper engine, whereas just three trims plonk the 3.0-litre unit.

The variants are available with manual and automatic transmissions.

• A total of seven variants are available with a manual gearbox, while rest four are equipped with an automatic tranny

Is the 2019 Isuzu D-Max available with a four-wheel drive?

Yes, the latest iteration of D-Max comes with a four-wheel drivetrain. However, the 4WD is available as a standard fitment with the 3.0-litre mill, while the new 1.9-litre unit is available with both 4x2 and 4x4 options.

How does the new D-Max stack up against rivals in terms of price?

The new 2019 Isuzu D-Max is relatively affordable compared to its rivals such as Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, and Ford Ranger.

Out of the two, the base model of Mitsubishi Triton costs slightly less at RM 78,890 as against Isuzu D-Max’s entry level variant priced at RM 80, 149. However, the fully-loaded top-spec variant in the Mitsubishi Triton’s range costs RM 17,000 more than D-Max’s range-topping trim priced at RM 137, 900.

Which pickup is more powerful, 2019 Isuzu D-Max or Toyota Hilux?

The 2019 Isuzu D-Max is available with two engine options, a 3.0-litre oil burner, and the latest 1.9-litre diesel engine. While the 1.9-litre unit is good for 148 hp, the higher displacing 3.0-litre engine puts out 175 hp. 

On the other hand, the Toyota Hilux is available with a single 2.4-litre diesel motor, which also makes 148 hp. However, unlike D-Max, Toyota Hilux is available in 4x4 drivetrain only.

The latest outing of Isuzu D-Max remains largely the same on the outside and inside, save for some tweaks. The highlight on the 2019 model remains the latest 1.9-litre BluePower diesel engine that replaces the previous 2.5-litre mill. According to the company claims, it is more durable, and emissions have been reduced significantly. Besides, the safety and convenience kit sees a new addition to the list. Interestingly, the 2019 Isuzu D-Max price witnesses no significant change with the above revisions and is still an affordable option in the segment.
