2021 Rolls Royce Ghost with new Serenity formula coming soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Rolls Royce is on a mission to make the next-generation Ghost extremely quiet. For this, the ultra-luxury carmaker has come up with a new Serenity formula, which has been developed by the marque's acoustic specialists. The company recently released an animated video showing the new Ghost's suspension and powertrain technologies and disclosed some initial details about the vehicle's comfort features. 

The design process of the new Ghost has been termed as the 'Formula For Serenity' by the automaker and it is based on the feedback received from clients who demand a near-silent cabin. 

Things begin with the aluminum space frame platform, which offers a higher acoustic impedance as compared to steel, according to the company. The engineers installed a double-skinned bulkhead section to isolate the 6.75-litre V12 engine compartment from the interior. Further, they filled the cavities in the roof, trunk, floor, and doors with more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of sound-absorbing materials. 

Moreover, the luxury saloon's double-glazed windows are packed with a clear composite center sheet, and its tyres contain lightweight acoustic insulation foam. All these together help in making the environment quieter.

But pure silence can be disorienting; with this thought, the team has tuned each interior element, including the trunk and seat frames, to a specific resonant frequency. So, now the Ghost's cabin generates a soft "whisper."

New Ghost Acoustic Engineering Lead, Tom Davis-Reason, says, "The extraordinary acoustic quality of new Ghost is the result of significant engineering developments and fastidious attention to detail, but it really is underpinned by the marque's proprietary aluminium architecture. There is simply no way we could have created such an acoustically refined environment using a steel platform."

No doubt, other automakers in the automotive landscape also build super quiet cars, but Rolls Royce truly takes the things to the next level.

The redesigned Ghost offering serenity is likely to unveil soon with deliveries expected to start early next year.
